So called because of its truly "ruinous" effect on your palate, this massive hop monster will change forever your preconceptions of what defines good beer. This is Stone IPA's big brother, and we mean BIG. We essentially began with our already-awesome Stone IPA, threw in an extra-large helping of malt, and added a lot more hops. And then some more. And then even more, resulting in a vibrant blast of citrusy bitterness that hits you on the first sip. Just one taste and you'll know why we call this indelicate jewel "A liquid poem to the glory of the hop!"

One of the first regularly brewed and bottled imperial IPAs.

(Re-rate, bottle, 0.355 l - BBE 17.01.2012, at Pikkulintu, 20120103) The beer poured amber and clear. Its head was medium sized and white. Aroma had fruity and citric hops and malts. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were fruity, citric and piny hops, malts, sweetness and bitterness. Aftertaste was hoppy and bitter. Very different beer than when I tried this one previous time. Nice hop profile and long lasting pleasant flavour.

(Bottle at Sorbon, Bromma, on 2009-07-28) Amber and clear. Small white head. Hoppy and malty aroma. Medium bodied and dry palate with low carbonation. Malts, sweetness, molasses, hops, fruitiness, grass and bitterness in taste. Malty and bitter aftertaste. Rating: 3.6

Draught, at Rattle & Hum on 28th July 2009, during the East West Challenge. Gold with quickly thinning white head. Exquisitely hoppy, dry and richly flavoursome. Grassy, herby hop from start to a longish finish that is above average duration. Rich and intense, very enjoyable.

Bottled. Clear orange color, short head. Aroma of hops, pine, hint of strawberry. Soft hoppy taste, although ofcourse it ruins your palate. Perfect balance. Give me more of this stuff!

Bottle. An amber coloured pour with an average head. Hop, citrus, floral aroma. Wonderful hop blast with just the right balance. God I love this beer, I was drinking this by the pool in Palm Springs last year and I was punching the air with delight, my wife thought I was bloody crazy! If only English beers tasted like this. One of my all time favourites, simply love it!

Draught at McGloughlin’s. Huge hop bomb with tons of citrus and pine. Nice fruit and gumball backing. Malt just enough to keep up. HArd to drink a pint, but great flavor. Much better fresh. Bottle from about 7 months ago. Flowery citrus hops, smooth and mild aroma. Honey-and-lemon flavor. Very well balanced. 8/3/8/4/15 Flowery citrus hops, smooth and mild aroma. Honey-and-lemon flavor. Original rating:
Location: Sept 2008, bottle from Norm's

Overall Impression: Really tasty IPA. Hoppy beer with a nice piney flavor. Enjoyed this one a lot. Stone is a seriously good brew house.

Updated rating to cover all categories:
Location: 3/24/09, 6 pack of 12 oz bottles from Gilly's, poured this one into one of those Sam Adams bubble glasses

Aroma: Really great nose, smell is all Pine, grass, earth, with plenty of hops, and just a touch of citrus
Appearance: Good looking clear orange beer, thin head
Flavor: Basically a hops explosion on the tongue, earthy hops, a little floral, just a touch of sweet
Palate: Wonderful palate, medium body, with a great mouthfeel that really enhances the beer
Overall Impression: I love this one, an incredible IPA, right up there with the best I've ever tried. Strong, hoppy beer that translates well across the tongue.

I was extremely fortunate to try two pints of this from a cask at Rustico that was dry hopped with both Columbus and Amarillo hops. The difference was amazing. The aroma was outrageous, so much so, that I was savoring my pint and people standing around me were intrigued by the aroma and asked what I was drinking. From the cask it poured a hazy, orange, amber with a slightly, spittle head. Aroma was of liquid hops, grapefruits, mangos, pine, lemons, resin, oranges, limes, a bit of juniper. The aroma from the dry hopping was unbelievable. Flavor is bitter, but also fruity, citrus fruits, some light toast and caramel with more pine. Finish, as you’d imagine, was bitter and slightly dry with just a touch of oil too. Good in the bottle, great dry hopped on cask.

Bottle, Beer Ritz, Leeds. This was definitely an in your face gargle, and well worthy of bringing up my 500th rate. Poured a rich coppery gold colour with a pillowy white head. Aroma was very bright, loadsa fruity hop combined with sweet chewy toffee malt. Very up front flavour that grabs your taste buds and gives them a good throttle. Big sacks of grassy, fruity hops, grapefuit and a decent amount of malt that all leaves a fabulous bitterness. I can see how this might not be to everyone’s taste, but this is a fabulous drink.
