This intense Imperial Stout is defined by its high bitterness from the hops and the sweetness from the malt and alcohol, it creates a good balance which makes Black Hole an explosion of nuances, but also leaves a feeling of a complex beer. Black Hole is what Mikkeller is all about. Daring, vulgar and extreme. From the very beginning Mikkellers goal has been to push the limit and with this warming, intense imperial stout, a new chapter in the Danish beer history has been written.

16/03/2012 Brasserie 4:20 (tap). Bevuta al 5th Stout&Porter Festival. Nera, densa, impenetrabile, schiuma color cappuccino abbastanza persistente. Aroma intenso di malti tostati, cereali, cioccolato. In bocca è dolce, cioccolatosa, stucchevole fin dai primi sorsi, sgraziatissima, abbastanza fastidiosa. Corpo pieno, carbonazione soft. Imperial stout assolutamente mediocre. Decisamente meglio le versioni "barrel aged.

Bottle shared at Nate’s Goodbye Party. Black and oily pour with a fine, white head. Big sweet beer. Lots of licorice and dark sugar. Dark fruits. Light roast in the aroma and flavor. Mostly just tons of dark sugar and mild chocolate. Full bodied with fine to average carbonation. Lightly warming finish, big sweetness, sticky sweet, in fact. More licorice, sweet bread, light roast. Good stuff. Big and sweet. Not as boozy as you might think. You really only want a small serving of this due to the beer’s intensity, but it is a great sipper.

From tap @ Mikkeller Bar. As black as they come this is a lovely looking brew. It has a small sidesticking, bubbly tan head. The aroma has licorice, hedgy flowerish tones, roasted malts, chili, alcohol and gunpowder. Soft yet powerful texture on this. Spicy and a bit surprising flavors here; cinnamon, chili, chocolate, light grassy hoppy bitterness with a not so pleasant refrigeration-like almost metallic flavor towards the finish. I think this actually could be a bit too sweet for me. Lovely rich and powerful stuff, but enough is enough. And by that I mean a sample. It's just a bit too sweet for a black beer. 06.01.2012

From a 375ml bottle on 2/1/2011. Pours a very dark brown with a small tan head. The aroma is of chocolate, cocoa, coffee, dark fruit, and some roasty notes. The flavour is dominated by sweet milk chocolate, but there’s also caramel and orange there. There’s a good dose of balancing bitterness from the hops and the roastiness, but the sweetness tends to win out. The texture is very creamy. The alcohol is ridiculously well hidden for 13.1%, making it dangerously drinkable. Excellent.

Still entering my notes from Dark Lord Day. Very solid black, with thin ring of foam, but that could be because everything I get is the last bits of the bottle. Smell has a nice sweet coffee and alcohol smell. Good sweet coffee taste again. Coffee cordial character helps smooth out the roastiness of the malts. Sweetness does not overwhelm.

12.7 oz bottle, shared with 4 others. Poured a near black color, dark brown at edges. Aroma is a bit like bitter, burnt coffee. A bit robust, alcohol is pretty well hidden for being 13% but I don’t think I’d even want to attempt to drink one of these small bottles alone.

Bottle 375ml @ home
Pours black with a tan head. Aroma has notes of roasted malt, chocolate, coffee, licorice, alcohol, citrus and grassy hops. Taste is heavy sweet and medium to heavy bitter with a long warming malty sweet and bitter fruity finish. Body is full, texture is oily, carbonation is soft.

Amazing beer. Pitch black with a huge creamy brown head. Smells coffee, vanilla and hops, which is a great combination. Tastes very deep. Chocolate, vanilla, roasted malts, sweet and slightly hoppy. Also lots of coffee. Full body, silky, thick, lovely.
