This intense Imperial Stout is defined by its high bitterness from the hops and the sweetness from the malt and alcohol, it creates a good balance which makes Black Hole an explosion of nuances, but also leaves a feeling of a complex beer. Black Hole is what Mikkeller is all about. Daring, vulgar and extreme. From the very beginning Mikkellers goal has been to push the limit and with this warming, intense imperial stout, a new chapter in the Danish beer history has been written.

Shared at home from a .5 l bottle, Pours dark black with a tan head. Boozy coffee nose. Complex blend of chocolate, espresso, toffee and dark fruits. Superb.

375ml bottle to celebrate Father’s day :) bbe 07/12/15. Pitch black, thin but lasting brown head. Aroma has roasted malt, chocolate, coffee, wood and sticky sweetness. Very complex, at first it feels overly sweet, coffee with half a cup of brown sugar, but later on the hops kicks in, getting citrusy hoppiness towards finish. No alcohol at all. Long smooth roasted finish. Scaringly easy to drink. One of the best from Mikkeller, also one of the most complex beers I have tried.

Picked this up for $12 at Hunger Mountain Co-Op. Pours a leathery brown. Black in the glass. 4-finger coffee / chocolate covored head that fades incredibly slow. This is all coffee. Nothing else really comes through. Taste is dominating coffee and chocolate covered espresso beans. You can clearly taste the 13%. Very carbonated, heavy body.

375 ml. bottle split by 4 @ Kulminator // really filthy bottle with cat hair sticking on it & 14/08/2011 BBF - this is clearly the fist back - from 2009? - apparently 2007 // silver foil // oily. sluggish black. no head, not that awesome actually // smells is very thick roast, burned toast, raw plastic, sherry, licorice, molasses, clearly alcoholic, burned espresso, clearly degraded by age, not terribly enjoyable for me // muddled, fallen apart for a reasonable part. bitter harsh roast, plastic, mocha, touch honey. burned. cobwebs. almost hint medicinal, touch cough syrup. burned espresso, some remains of milk chocolate and cream. boozy // still somewhat thick body, not much in the way of carb. // apparently fresh this was sweet, this one has clearly moved quite a bit away from that // not sure why people insist about celaring BIG stouts - unless if you want to get some of the hops out of there which it has when it is young but otherwise // these beers stay good for a long time but not years and they just stay good, they don’t get better // even stuff like Belgians, not sure why people want their triples for instance to taste like old candy, dust and just sugar // still liked the BA versions. Tequila was incredible

Purchased at West Lakeview Liquors in Chicago, IL; enjoyed at a good friends house while watching the White Sox come back to win a game. 1000th rating!!! Appearance is pitch black, looks rich, thin off white head that laces to the glass. Aroma is very potent, huge chocolate malt, coffee, light mint, lactose, licorice, lots going on with this. Taste is thick, potent, rich and delicious. Huge chocolate notes with a powerful coffee bitterness, with notes of licorice and mint. Great stuff. When I was on rating #1 I couldn’t imagine paying $1 per 1 oz of beer, and this was about $12 for 12 oz. Who knows what will happen for the next 100th rating...

bottle 35,7 cl ( from 2007) enjoyed in the kulminator . pours black ( whats in a name) and no matter how you trie, you simpley cant get a foam on this one. vertical glass, bottle very high and still, you get like 5 bubbles as a ’foam’ .. smells like its gonna have a hint of sourness, wich was definatley there, but in very, very little amounts. ( this could also be cause of its 5 years maturing i guess ) it taste a certain complexity, but it aint overwhelming. i do realy need more carbonation in a beer. its unlike everything i ever drank, almost no carbonation at all ! i’m not regretting drinking this, but i’d say half a bottle would have been enough. maybe i’d drink this again but not to soon ..

Received in trade from MeadMe, thanks for the opportunity. After wrestling the cork out, I poured the darkest of black liquid into my glass with a smattering of small tan bubbles that dissipates almost instantly. Smells of coffee first and foremost with a vinous, smokey, earthy and chocolate aroma providing support. Some caramel and dark dried fruit and a touch of ethanol round out the edges. The flavor is sweet with a healthy dose of coffee. Chocolate, earthy hop flavor, dark cherries, and caramel all play their parts. Medium body with barely any carbonation and a watery chocolate syrup kind of mouthfeel. Smells great, tastes good, but the mouthfeel really could use some more bubbles to make this beer great.

Bottle, BB 07/12/15 alc. 13,1%. A black beer with a medium, but decreasing, small bubbled, beige head. Aroma is rich and comlplex, roastiness and salt liquirice, black coffee, herbs and lots of sweetness. Taste is strong, but smooth and balanced, strong roastiness with lots of sweetnes, coffee, salt liquirice, enough of herball bitterness dries the aftertaste. Full bodied, smooth, some stickyness after sweet body. Strong, sweet, still balanced, even high alc.% "easy" and enjoyable, not too complex.

375 ml. capped bottle (small geuze) poured in to a snifter. Late 2011 bottling. Deep brown-black with a dense, small head of large, tanned bubbles. Powerful aromas of molasses, coffee and chocolate, along with a more subtle grass, earth, vanilla and smoke. The taste is very intense sweet with honey. The honey is complemented by bitter hops and distinctive roasted notes. Full body with a thick, creamy texture and very little carbonation. The finish is long and malty, with roasted malts and coffee. No sign of the high ABV. Black Hole is an excellent crafted imperial stout, however too sweet for me, like a dessert. Overall an excellent experience, but to much sweetness for a 4.0 total.

Roasted barley and soil nose. Black, thick beige head, fine tan floaties, nice lacing. Sweet coffee with a tangy cherries. Finishes with bitter malt char. Although I do prefer a bit of sweetness in my stouts, this crosses the line to being cloying. It works well with both the coffee and fruit notes, but in the end, it is just too sweet. Not one of Mikkeller’s better beers.
