This intense Imperial Stout is defined by its high bitterness from the hops and the sweetness from the malt and alcohol, it creates a good balance which makes Black Hole an explosion of nuances, but also leaves a feeling of a complex beer. Black Hole is what Mikkeller is all about. Daring, vulgar and extreme. From the very beginning Mikkellers goal has been to push the limit and with this warming, intense imperial stout, a new chapter in the Danish beer history has been written.

Bottle at the 5th Annual Epic Beer Tasting in Richmond, VA, November 28, 2010. Pours an oily, inky black color with a dark brown thin head. Big dark aroma with toffee notes, roasted malts, coffee, and tart fruity notes. The taste is big dark roasted malts, coffee, chocolate, minty hops and caramel. Full bodied.

Bottle at CPK thanks to Nate2g on 1st November 2010. Deep brown with pale brown head. Thick rewarding woody fruity aroma. Thick body of spice, malt, fruit and a nutty saltiness. Burtnt roast malts in finish and an engaging mouthfeel. Thanks Nathan, IOU1

[375ml bottle - gift from my wonderful wife] Deep brown-black, no head at all, very slight fizz. Huge sweet coffee and rich fruit (raisins?) aroma. On tasting, brown sugar and a roasted (almost burnt) malt bitterness come to the fore, but unlike some impy’s the burnt bitterness gradually fades to reveal plain chocolate, dates, raisins, smoke, coffee, a woodland earthiness and even some leafy hops in the background. Although it’s certainly warming, the alcohol is not especially evident. It’s a wonderfully complex and delicious beer - my enjoyment grew with each sip, until by the end I had a big happy smile on my face, and I can’t ask for much more than that from a beer! My only criticism is that at times the mouthfeel is a little too sticky and syrup-y, but given how much I enjoyed it I can probably forgive it that!

Sample from tap at Beer Temple. Black colour, beige head. Aroma of strong hops, roasted malts, coffee, some sweetness. Flavour is hard roasted malts, coffee, dark fruits, lots of sugary sweetness, good roasted and hoppy bitter finish. Fullbodied. Really good roasted flavours and bitterness, but unfortunately the sweetness is way too much for me.

On tap @ Beer Temple. Black color with small tan head, some lacing. Strong aroma’s of roasted malt, coffee/mocha, dried fruit, soy sauce. I just sat there smelling the beer for about 10 minutes until I started sipping it. Bittersweet chocolaty taste, roasted. Very full bodied, almost syrupy, but the alcohol is quite well hidden, although definitely warming the throat. Long finish with the flavor slowly evolving towards a fine bitterness with charcoal/ash. Great big brew.

First sampling: August 3, 2010 and Second sampling: May 18, 2011-- same rating Bottle, pours an uncarbonated black with a small light brown head. Strong hops aroma escapes the glass, with roasted malts, toffee, bourbon, dark fruits and some wood as well. Immensely full-bodied flavour of toffee, roasted malts, coffee, hops and licorice - extremely thick and complex mouthful, with a finish of hops and plum, and of course a warming effect. ABV is hardly noticeable. Absolutely remarkable. 9 5 10 5 19. 4.8/5 Third sampling: April 4, 2013 Bottle, pours black with a very large tan / brown head. Aroma brings out loads of coffee and syrupy honey upfront, sweet dark fruits, and caramel. Flavour brings out intense notes of honey and syrupy caramel above anything, along with further subdued notes of coffee and some roasted malt. This is way different than I remember - much more syrupy and sweet. The body is as smooth as from memory, but is borderline cloying in sweetness. ABV is no where to detected. Not sure if Mikkel has changed the recipe on this or if my tastes have changed (I think the former) but this seems like a whole different beer. No where near as complex or deep. Still, very good for what it is. 7 4 7 3 15 3.6/5

Bottle looks really, really good, the beer in the glass also. Deep black, small head. Intense malty aroma. Starts very strong, fiery, a bit alcoholic. Intense malty, smoky, notes of chocolate. Finish milder in the first moment, but the aftertaste again strong and intense malty, very well balanced. A great Imperial Stout!

Bottle. Brandy and chocolate malt aroma. Opaque black with slight film of a head. Very sweet dark chocolate, coffee, brandy flavor with a strong bitter finish with an alcohol burn. Nice, vinous beer - I would have liked more malt flavor.

Pitch black coloured body with a deep coffee and roasted malt aroma - nice! Full-bodied; Super potent, sweet flavours at first with a bit of a lactic kick and a touch of cherries at the end. Aftertaste shows a lot of roasted malt, oatmeal, spices (anise & nutmeg), cherries and a whole lot of alcohol - nice! I sampled this 37.5 cL ’split’ bottle purchased from West LakeView Liquors in Chicago, Illinois on 26-January-2008.

Oil-black tarlike pour and the mouth feel of a coffee flavored shale. Almost like drinking crude oil, but with a caramel coffee flavor. It’s a good stout, but packs quite a punch. Rated 6/30/09
