Selten ein Bier getrunken, das deratig intensiv nach Bitterschokolade geschmeckt hat. Passt aber ganz gut.

Bottle at home picked up from Watford Asda. A dark brown black coloured pour with a fading loose tan head. Aroma is burnt earth, tangy dried fruit, burnt treacle, low meaty roast. Flavour is sweet cakey malts, dried fruits, liquorice, burnt cake, burnt milk. Lactose. Palate is rounded, creamy, moderate carbonation, lactose sugar sweetness. Lingering bitter roast. Not bad.

Bottle at home as a take-out from The Old Jerusalem Tavern. A flat beer with a minimal head, but some lacing. The colour was as black as night and quite pretty against the silver of the tankard. The aroma was light roasted malts which gently introduced you to the main event. The taste was spectacular, a huge wave of roasted and quite bitter malt that washed over my mouth and quite literally filled up my senses. The mouthfeel was caressing because of all that malt and warming from the alcohol. I don't think I have ever had that much malt before and towards the end of the pint I was struggling because it was so rich. It was certainly an experience, but did I like it? I'm still not certain because of all that malt and a lack of dimension to the flavours. It's a very English stout because of the St Peters "house bitterness" which should be right up my street, but it was all a bit too much. Would I buy it again? No, but I am very glad I experienced it.

Bottle. Pours opaque black with small brown head. Aroma is rotated malt, licorice, soy sauce and Marmite. Taste is medium sweet, light to medium bitter and faint acidic. Body is creamy with soft carbonation. Finish is long and balanced sweet and bitter with notes of malt, brown sugar, soy sauce, coffee, licorice and mint.

Transparent black color with a fine creamy beige top. Good lacing. Moderate intensity in the aroma. Medium body and a fine mellow carbonation level. Balanced sweetness. Chocolate, some roast, fruity and some vanilla in the flavor. Nice and bit to session able beer.

Update, august 2024. Pours dark brown, looks almost black in the glass. A relatively low mocha/brownish head, shows good enough persistence and litttle lacing. A quite subdued, soft feeling aroma: light roasted malts with hints of milk coffee, vanilla, very light fruity (fruit cake) hints. Taste notes follow the aroma, now with average intensity and brightness. Quite high sweetness, low to medium bitterness; defintely on the sweet side in the mouth but nicely balanced in finish/aftertaste, with a dry enough feeling and a hint of roasted malts reminiscence. The beer is clean and precise, there's maybe a tad too much contrast between the sweet mouthfeel and the finish though. Medium body, pretty light carbonation; feels soft and indeed a bit creamy (less than expected for a beer with cream in it's name). Overall quite pleasant.
