In the world of stouts there are big, rich doozies, quaffable, zippy doo-dahs, and everything in between. Dark doesn't automatically mean heavy, and our new Dry Stout is here to prove just that.

With a simple roasted malts, sub 5% ABV, and a roasty, dry flavour profile, our Dry Stout is surprisingly easy drinking and ready to change your mind about the seasonal designations of dark beers.

Balanced notes of coffee, dark chocolate, with a firm hop bitterness.

Quite roasty, and chocolatey. Decent hops, easy drinking, medium bitter. Loads of coffee and roasted cereals.

Pitch black color. Thin light brown head. Nose is fairly linear, just roasted malts with cacao nibs not noticeable. Mouth is thin, light roasted character. Fairly undistinguished from more mainstream stouts. Not bad, but a letdown from Bellwoods. They can do better. As the beer warms up it becomes a bit sweeter and cacao nibs show up more. Still doesn’t taste any better though.

Tasting at Matt’s
Dark brown, almost black color. The aroma of mildly roasted malts is a bit oxidized, dusty, potatoes too come to mind. Dry mouthfeel, a bit too watery, with accent on roasted malt, some liquorice, very light chocolate, but overall the flavor is pretty boring.

Had this one in the hopper for a while. I do love me some Bellwoods, if not every one of their brews, so always wanting to try more. Bottle marked Sept 23, 2014. (A very good day.) Pours a respectable dark stout, with a thick brown head. Lots of roasted malt, a little dust, and touch of bark. Taste a little thin, lots of roasted malts, dust, touch of ash. Not thrilled by this one, but that’s alright, still looking forward to every Bellwoods that comes my way.

500mL bottle, sent from wilco (thanks a lot, Mike), pours black with a small tan head. Nose brings out lots of roasted malt, some smoke and dry cocoa nibs. Flavour is very dry, with unsweetened cocoa nibs, roasted malt and a touch of smoke. Very dry palate, with quite a lot of roast and smoke. Quite flavourful for a 4.5% stout. Good stuff for the style.

(500mL bottle from the brewery) Pours lightly hazed (chill?) near black, mahogany highlights, small dense dark tan head that lingers pretty well with lots of lace. Aroma of stronger milk chocolate, medium roast coffee, a slight caramel-like sweetness, fairly big aroma for a lighter stout. Palate has dark, lightly roasted malts in the forefront with a slight fruitiness but almost no sweetness. Dry roast in the middle, lightly ashy, unsweetened roasted cacao bean which carries through to the finish. Lightish body, moderate bubbly soda carb. Smells nice, very dry on the palate, bit too watery and light on flavor for me though I’m not a huge dry stout fan. Nitro might flatter it more. I know it’s just an experiment, but I think it needs more of everything.
