Much like the name, this beer is plagued with an ominous past, and we brewed it 3 times before it finally made its way to the public. Dark, hoppy, and with a mind of its own, Gotham has put us through the ringer. Complex, bold aromatics of citrus rind and dark berries, lingering bitterness of orange pith, pine resin and dark cocoa.

Malts: Vienna, Marris Otter, Carafa Special III, Caramunich III, Carafoam.
Hops: Amarillo, Citra
Yeast: American Ale

(650mL bottle from brewery, 1 day post bottling) Deep mahogany pour, clear but with lots of little floaties, dense tan frothy head and some spotty lace. In the nose, dark malt, light roast coffee, cocoa powder, lots of pine/hop resin, light citrus zest and smoke. On the palate, dark malt with sweet mocha character, pine resin, roast, blackberry. Light roast, citrus pith, pine resin on the finish with a little lingering coffee. Moderate bitterness, slight alcohol heat, quite dry for its sweet malt core. Mouthfeel is medium-full and slightly oily, soft carb. Fairly complex on the palate in particular, very hop-forward but has a fairly strong malt core. A touch sweet but also doesn’t just taste like a hoppy porter, much more like an IPA in character. Very nice stuff, hides its alcohol well so it could be dangerous...

On tap at the brewery. A great luscious pitch black pour with a thick foamy tan head & great lacing. Wonderfully soft cocoa & fruity/herbal hop notes. Medium-full bodied with a sweet chocolate & cocoa flavor, think Hershey’s chocolate syrup & coffee. A really nice black IPA good dark malt quality with a nice hoppiness.
