To commemorate an important milestone in Anchor Brewing’s long history, a special ale seemed appropriate. Having found and experimented with a very rare and unusual hop variety called Nelson Sauvin, we knew that its unique character would impart a wonderful flavor and aroma to a pale ale brewed especially for the occasion: Humming Ale.

12 ounce bottle from Once Upon a Vine South, Richmond, VA, opened 9/23/10. Pours a clear amber color with an off-white frothy head. Aroma of big citrus hops including lemon and grapefruit and well as some tropical notes and pale malts. The taste is citrus and tropical hop notes with a bitter finish and a bit of caramel maltiness. Medium bodied. Decent.

(bottle, 35.5cl) Hazy, oranger-golden colour with a big and slightly off-white foamy head. Lemony and piney hoppy aroma with a slightly yeasty malty background. Moderately bitter flavour, medium to light bodied with a moderate carbonation. Soft (fermented) malty base with a fruity, even slightly exotic (pineapple, passion fruit) hoppy taste; quite dry malty and moderately bitter finish with a cornucopia of hop flavours. Truly aromatic and moreish. 25.X.10

Clean medium gold color with a fine head. Sharp hop aroma: citrus, grass, metal. Very light on the malts. Flavor starts with light caramel and bready malts, then goes to grassy, metallic hops with strong citrus. Bitter through to the finish where there is also a lingering grainy character. Earthy malts work well with pepper hops. Light, crisp, refreshing and quite bitter. Good, original hopping, not extremely exciting, but good drinking.

Wew, big fat pilsner or ipa floral aroma. Hazy pale ale color with a big rocky head. First taste has quite a personality; its niftily bitter like an IPA but it also reminds me alot of the bitterness you find in high hopped lagers, weird. Citrusey rude at times. Like chewing on green citrus rinds. A little strong in the taste department for this lager lover. Gets a little more nasty as the session continues. Yep, strong for a pale ale but I guess thats how the ales are progressing now days; each style is getting more and more of the hoppy bite and still remains in style when perhaps it should be in the next hoppier style. Yea, almost like a milder IPA I’d say on the finish too, medium long hop bitter finish. However, it does not coat the mouth with that IPA oily residue.

12 oz bottle. Pours gold with a white head. Heavily floral hop aroma with pine resin tones and a sharp touch of spice. Flavor is very resinous and spicy with grape notes, biscuit, floral hops, and hints of citrus. Green grape comes through stronger toward the end of the glass. Quite a tasty pale ale.

Bottle from Corks of Cotham, Bristol. Poured a darkish gold colour with a medium sized, lingering white head. Nose was pleasantly hoppy with some nice pineapple notes. Very tidy balance to the flavour which had further citrus notes and mingled an unobtrusive level of resinous herby hop bitterness with some solid sweet malts. Crisp and clean with a gently lingering bitter finish. Really drinkable stuff.

[9/28/10] Bottle at a friend’s place in Amsterdam. Clear golden with a small white head. Sweet malty, honey-ish, slightly grainy aroma with a bit of fruits and faint hops. Sweetish malty flavor with a bit of bready notes, light caramel hints and a drier finish with a bit of floral hops. Medium-bodied.

Key Food, Prospect Heights ($10.49): Pours a golden color with a frothy white head. British-like piny hops aroma leading me to the assumption that it as at least partly modeled on British style IPAs (the few that I’ve had). Quite hoppy and bitter with citrus notes throughout. Sessionable, but also very flavorful. A good, well-balanced brew.

Pour is a bronze with a large white head. Aroma is a decent pine hops with some toasted malt. Flavor is again some mild hops with a decent malty backbone. This is a easy drinking, sessionable pale ale.

Bottle from Utobeer Market Stall. Pale golden pour with a white head. Fresh hop nose. Nice citrus angle, gently caresses the nasal passages. Crisp, citrus flavours with a hint of herbs. Gentle hop tingle. Goes down very nicely.
