Bottle - Roasted malts and a woody sweetness. Mahogany with a brown head. Coffee and a nice sweetness but I don’t taste the birch. There is an odd bitterness that has a long finish I am not a fan of.

(650mL ’Project X’ bottle from brewery) Pour is black with a bit of brownish highlight at the rim, small short-lived off-white head, minimal lace. Aroma is roast malt, a slightly woody/smoky character I would say was from the birch, dark sweet chocolate, little bit of hops. At first sweet, roasty malts, in the middle a slight coffee/dark fruit character with roast, a bit sweet, a bit woody. Finish becomes quite birch sap-like, sweet but woody, roast note still quite prominent but never quite dry though a bitterness lingers. Body moderate, slightly sticky, doesn’t leave me feeling like it’s too watery like some porters. Carb average. An interesting experiment becomes a pretty darn good porter, on the sweet side but flavourful.

Great start to beer fest. No water, only birch sap and for once the oddball experiment comes off well. Nice flavour to it. Pours syrupy black but texture isn’t that syrupy, actually. Aroma of birch, roast malt, light hops. Sweet and bitter taste. Average carbonation. Some robust musky aroma that I love in porters as well. Tap at Session.
