A complex, flavourful and fascinating ale lies just on the edge of being totally out of control. Stephan Beaumont, Celebrator Beer News
India Pale Ale dates back to the 1700s when Britain needed a hearty beer to ship to her troops in India. Because the ships had to cross the equator twice to get there, spoilage was a major problem until some clever brewer realized that both alcohol and hops are natural preservatives. James brews Hurricane I.P.A. in this tradition, and packs it with enough hops and alcohol to survive crossing the orbit of Mercury twice. The grist is 100% Gambrinus premium 2-row barley malt, copiously hopped with fresh Centennial and Willamette. The result is a rich, golden, intense beer with bitterness in perfect balance with residual sweetness.

Poured from the tap. Never tried it so why not? 7% ABV. Hazed gold with small white head. Feint toffee malt, a bit of pine hops, boring and a bit watery. Meh.

I don't think this should be rolled into the Hurricane IPA as Storm is labelling it as a separate brew of theirs, the 100% James IPA on tap at their brewery. Growler fill for me. Pours with a nice bit of foam and heavily carbonated yellow body. Smells of musty hops with some vegetable, cabbage, orange zest. Flavour is sharp hops followed by some mellow malts. Mouthfeel is balanced between oil and other stuff so it's okay there. Not a bad IPA, typical as it is which is surprising given Storm's usual repertoire of bizarre concoctions.

Earlier Rating: 5/13/2010 On tap at the Alibi Room, pours orange. Aroma and flavour of citrus and hops. Nothing really special here, but a solid ordinary IPA.

Draft - Citrus orange and grapefruit with a bit of resin. Clear pale gold with a thin white head. Very dry, resinous but some nice sweet citrus flavors. A decent IPA, I was lucky to get some right from the fermenter once that was sublime. I think if I had a fresher batch it would be much better.

Draught at Falconetti on Commercial Dr., Vancouver
Cloudy blond color, very much British Golden Ale like. The hop aroma is lightly fruity, and very lightly earthy. Quite good, lean, malt and toffee flavor; reasonably good hopping, quite aromatic; bold bitterness; clean finish.
Well drinkable, but after all the poor beers I had in Vancouver, even this one becomes interesting...

A strong hoppy nose, but the body is much more malty than usual IPA and then the hops coming back in the finish for a final bang.

Hazy golden-tan. Fruity-hoppy aroama of blackberry, pear, wood. Similar palate with moderate woody bitterness. Strong berryish lead, with light biscuity pale malts in the background and hints of toast.
