For his latest Unchained brew, Summit brewer Christian Dixon delivers a tribute to one of the true American beer styles, utilizing the best of both modern and classic techniques and ingredients. Zingiber Cream Ale is a 50/50 hybrid of ale and lager, brewed identically and fermented separately utilizing unique yeast strains, then blended after fermentation. The combination lets the true characteristics of both styles shine through. Clean and crisp meets malty-sweet, full-bodied and robust. The addition of organic Hawaiian ginger adds a bright, spicy dimension to this refreshing brew.

Got in a trade with The-Adjunct-Hippie. 12 ounce can into pint glass, best before 11/3/2016. Pours lightly hazy/cloudy medium golden/yellow color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and fluffy white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big lemon, ginger, wheat, cracker, corn, biscuit, light honey, herbal, grass, pepper, and yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance of pale malt, ginger, and light-moderate fruity yeast/earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of big lemon, ginger, wheat, cracker, corn, biscuit, light honey, herbal, grass, pepper, and yeast earthiness. Light-moderate herbal/grassy bitterness and peppery ginger spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of lemon, ginger, wheat, cracker, corn, biscuit, herbal, grass, pepper, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice robustness and balance of pale malt, ginger, and light-moderate fruity yeast/earthy hop flavors; with a great malt/bitter/spiciness balance, and no astringent hop/ginger notes after the finish. Light-moderate dryness from bitter/spiciness, increasing though the glass. Medium carbonation and light-medium body; with a very smooth, moderately crisp, and bready/grainy/sticky balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 5.3%. Overall this is a very nice spiced cream ale! All around nice robustness and balance of pale malt, ginger, and light-moderate fruity yeast/earthy hop flavors; very smooth, crisp, and quite refreshing to drink. Very well made cream ale to style. Very vibrant on ginger, but not overpowering and well balanced with the base beer. A very enjoyable offering.

All Pints North 2016. I intentionally avoided buying this beer because cream ales are generally not worthwhile, and this one is no exception unfortunately. Gold color. More hops than I expected and that is good, giving some aroma and lightly bitter flavor. I barely get the ginger at all, and probably only because I am looking for it. I like Summit and do not want to be too hard on them, and it is a cream ale, so what can you do? But the question I would ask is, why brew a cream ale at all?

Pour is a hazy orange with a small white head. Aroma is pale lager malt with a surprising amount of hops with a small amount of ginger. Flavor is a heavy pale malt with again a very minor ginger. Very nice malt profile for a cream ale. Very rich and chewy. Rating just the base beer I would have given this the same score the malt richness is pretty good for a lager/cream ale, the ginger is barely noticable.

Can. Pours a clear gold with a white head that dissipates slowly to the edges. Aroma has sweet grains and biscuit with a hint of fresh cut grass. Flavor is similar with grass, sweet grains and a bit of biscuit.
