From old tasting notes. Deep Amber red color. Thick rocky beige head. Earthy toasted malt nose. Bittersweet caramel malt flavor. Lots of hops from middle on. Bitter hop finish.

Bottle. Caramel malt and pine/grapefruit peel aroma. Dark amber with small head. Moderately sweet caramel malt and moderately bitter grapefruit peel flavor. Good body. Okay - might have been something special when there were only 5 IPAs available.

Bottle: Hazy, brown-amber with a small, creamy, tan head. Resiny ,slightly spoiled fruit aroma. Taste is dry, resin, old orange-peel, biscuit. Very dull and stale feeling.

12oz bottle into a Corsendonk tulip glass on 5th June 2016 while on holiday in California. Dark orange with a copper hue, the head an off-white affair. Hop forward in both the nose and taste, piney with a slight citrus leaning. OK, but no world beater.

Reviewed from notes.
This was poured into a pint glass every time I had it.
The appearance was a nice orange to amber color with a one finger white foamy head that dies basically within seconds. There is some lacing, but not much, as it leaves a bit to be desired.
The smell was a nice malty yet crisp floral sweet running about my nose.
The taste left a little bit to be desired with some of the previously mentioned tones scaled back a bit. The aftertaste seemed like it was overcooked caramels. The finish was quick and dry.
On the palate, it sat about a medium and didn’t show much of a sessionable quality to it. I found myself sipping this all of those nights.
Overall, this was nothing impressive and I found myself almost wishing I didn’t try this one.

The bottle opened with a Pop! and then poured a solid white head that eventually settled into a dark yellow body. Strange phenolics in the aroma. Some lacquer thinner. The flavor is lightly bitter with a sweet finish. i wouldn’t drink this one again.

A lot has changed since this was considered the most bitter beer in america - I’ve had much more bitter beers - however, what has not changed is the validity of many of the criticisms that have been lodged against this beer in the past - while it may not be as bitter as other beers, bitter is all it is, without much in the way of malt character or any other complexity to contrast - even the hop flavor itself is a bit abrasive - one dimensional and tough to enjoy.

Bottle from QFC - Seattle (Ballard)
Hazy amber color; medium sized creamy head. Light aroma of malt. Dry malt and some caramel flavor, strong bitterness, but missing interesting traits, be the malt or the hops.
