Sledding runs to the valley below, ski-carving on the slopes, snowshoe hiking in the crystalline mountain landscape, just pure winter fun. And that includes stopping off at a cosy mountain lodge to enjoy a Hofbräu Winterzwickl – the beer specially brewed for the winter season. Harmoniously strong, with slight hints of caramel and chocolate and a subtle malty note.

Bottle. Little Leeds Beer House. Gift off the missus. Light haze on a chestnut brown. Good beige foam. Nose has tangy vine fruit. Some burnt caramel. A little leathery. Taste is dry and lightly bitter. Some nutty caramel sweetness. Perfectly drinkable with foamy carbonation. Dry and light vinous finish.

Bottle. Slightly cloudy dark brown with a nice beige/white head. Aroma of malts, nougat, dark bread and chocolate. Taste of malts, bread, metal, caramel, some hazelnuts, dark chocolate and milk chocolate. A tad bit too sweet. Low bitterness. Medium to strong carbonation. Easy drinking as it should be. An ok to nice Dunkel.

500ml bottle. Hazy, dark brown colour with average to huge, thick, creamy, moderately lasting and lacing, beige head. Weak, grainy and minimally chocolately, malty aroma, a touch of spelt. Taste is grainy malty, minimally chocolately and bready, metallic overtones, hints of spelt, a touch of rye bread, very subtle, residual sweetness. Watery, minimally creamy texture, minimally dry, crumbly palate, medium, mildly prickly carbonation. A bit anaemic, no really explicit flavours - OK.

Bottle from Westhill Service Station. It pours dark brown with a thick, frothy light tan head. The aroma is toasty, bitter - sweet, rich brown bread character, nutty, rivita, woody, touch of fruit cake and caramel. The taste is dry, toasty, earthy malt, toothy, light umami, nutty, slightly charred wood, spice, caramel and a splash of cola with a dry, toasty finish. Medium body and moderate, foamy carbonation. Decent stuff. Robust and drinkable.

Bottle. Nose is malty, caramel, faint earth, dark fruits. Taste is treacle, caramel, thin banana, dough, earthy almost sour note, rich malt, bitter hazelnut, slight fruity tones, touch of spice. I really enjoyed this and thought the bitter almost sour hazelnut in the finish worked very well for me.

Optisch richtig schön, dunkles braun, stabiler Sahneschaum. In der Nase Karamell, auch im Trunk, leicht röstig, mir aber echt zu zurückhaltend. Wenn das intensiver wäre, wär es großartig.

50 cl. bottle @ home, bought @ Edeka, Kleve. Dark mahogany with an off-white head. Malty, bready caramel aroma with raisins and some chocolate. Sweet malty taste with a sour note and a light bitter finish. Medium to thick body. Reminds me heavily of a good doppelbock but without the added alcohol. Very nice winterbeer, even when drunk in the spring.
