Draft at the brewery, version 65. Deep brown-black body, thin light brown head. Served very cold. Nose of cocoa and roasted malts. Body sharply carbonated, with inky coffee bean, sharp roast, and a general bitterness, punctuated by hints of sweet chocolate. Bitter finish, boozy and warming. Subtle complexity and nice balance but it just seemed insubstantial. Curious if the beer changed with brewer turnover.

A deep dark stout with a thin very thin mocha head. In aroma, sweet fruity chocolate malt with light vanilla notes, light mineral notes, pleasant. In mouth, a nice sweet fruity chocolate malt with light vanilla, light licorice, alcohol warmth, very nice. Bottle at Dark Lord Day 2018.

Nearly black, small tan head. Chocolate, bourbon aroma. Chocolate, vanilla, a hint of dark fruit flavour.... Creamy with a very nice smoky, alcohol burn. An exceptional beer.

Bottle. After thinking about it, I decided I wanted my 2000th rating to be something from my home state, and not the expected whale, so I went for this special release from one of my favorite obscure local breweries. Smoky boozy whiskey, creamy chocolate, vanilla earthy-leathery-tobacco aroma. Poured black with a moderate creamy brown head. Sweet creamy chocolate, smooth smoky/oaky whiskey, vanilla, and a bit of prune flavor and some roast in the finish. Full creamy body soft carbonation. I chose well... this did not disappoint, and I expect it’s destined to become a whale.
