Here at the little brewery in Shiner, we’re happy to serve up our latest anniversary brew, Shiner 102. With a special recipe that sits between a bright wheat beer and wheat wine ale, this smooth, filtered, double wheat ale pours a pale straw color with hints of sweetness. And the aromatic Czech Saaz and Washington Golding Hops and the crisp character of malted wheat are sure to refresh your senses. Prosit!

12oz bottle pours clear deep gold with thin white head. The aroma offers up grainy malts, wheat notes, sweet apples, pears, honey and cheap pancake syrup. The taste is similar with grainy malts and wheat and then quickly picking up sweet green apples, some apricot notes and honey like sweetness. The wheat does get pretty thick and yields a pleasing level of sludgy creaminess which would seem to be spot-on for a double wheat.

Bottle. Bready malt and hay aroma. Golden yellow color with moderate head. Bready malt and lightly bitter grass hops flavor. Not bad - a straight forward wheat ale.

OK, so what does double wheat mean? Double the wheat attributes or double the alky? This double think is now across all style, yehck. From a twiest off bottle, filtered; no sediment. Sparkles nicely with a quarter inch thick non fading head. Smells just plain beery, not much hint of real wheat beers, but certainly a bit metallic. . Initial tiny banana in the background just as it hits my tongue. Alky is not too like-able for me in a wheat beer, and this does little to hide its volatility. Almost medicinal finsh, a little sterile.

12oz. loose bottle, $1.50 @ Famous Liquors. Pours a golden yellow color, not a lot of bubbles, but a nice looking head hangs around. Smell has a wheat quality to it, also some sourness. (I see "5 31 11" etched on the bottle, so I take that to mean it’s still fresh.) Taste is spritzy, just a lingering hint of that sour I smelled. Those Saaz they mentioned play to the fore, making for a decent presentation. A pretty ordinary beer, but I wouldn’t pass a sixer of this by. That’s how I feel about all the Shiners.

Bottle from some guy in Texas who’s in the navy? :) Pours pale or orangey gold - depending on how it’s held to the light. with a passing white head. Smells almost like honey. Flavor certainly suggests wheat with a light touch of honey. It’s not super sweet, and it is somewhat astringent, with definite bitter. But noble hop? Where’s the grass/herb? Submerged in a whole bunch of wheat malt? So it’s confusing, but it’s growing on me.

Refrigerated bottle poured into a weizen glass, thanks cavie. Pours a clear light yellow with small bright white head. Highly carbonated, light body, and just a touch of lacing. Taste is american wheat crossed with pilsner.

Pour is a clear golden with a small white head. Aroma is some sweet malts but very faint. Flavor is wheat up front then comes a real thick sweetness. Finish has some breadyness but overall kinda bland.

Bottle. Pours with a very light golden color with a white head. Aroma of citrus, wheat, a bit of spiciness, rye, and sewage. Very sweet, stale, bready, cardboard maltiness. Lively bubbles. Lingering citrus. Somewhat dry. Bad malt character on a malt forward beer.

Bottle. Pours a orange gold with a small frothy white head that leaves good sticky lacing along the glass. The aroma is a corn malt and caramel and cereal. Medium mouthfeel with a sweet malt and honey with a nice crisp finish. Easy to drink a good wheat, Happy 102!
