Monks have been brewing beer in Belgium for centuries. Their beers have been some of the most sought after in the world. Solitude is made in the tradition of the famous brewing monks of the Abbeys of Belgium. This beer is deep mahogany in color, malt forward with hints of caramel, pear & raisin.

Reviewed from notes. Rcvd in trade.
This was poured into a chalice.
The appearance was centered around a decent hazy golden yellow to somewhat orange/light brown color. There was a one finger white foamy head that dissipated within about a minute and left some light lacing sticking nicely around the sides of the glass.
The smell had some nice light Belgian spices up front and let in a slight sour lemon.
The taste took the lemon and the Belgian spices to town and let in a decent citrus flavoring. It left a really dry finish.
On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a pretty good sessionability about it. The carbonation was sharp but nothing overbearing.
Overall, I say this was a pretty good Belgian pale ale worthy of having again.

16 ounce can into tulip glass, no canning date. Pours moderately hazy deep ruby red color with a 2 finger fairly dense light khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Spotty foamy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of big cherry, raisin, prune, pear, caramel, candi sugar, pepper, clove, toast, light chocolate, herbal, brown sugar, and yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of fruity/spicy yeast and malt notes; with good strength. Taste of cherry, raisin, prune, pear, caramel, toast, pepper, clove, candi sugar, light chocolate, molasses, herbal, and yeast earthiness. Lingering notes of dark fruits, caramel, toast, clove, pepper, light chocolate, candi sugar, molasses, herbal, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice balance and complexity of fruity/spicy yeast and dark malt flavors; with a good malt/spiciness balance and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a smooth, lightly slick, and slightly syrupy mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice Belgian dark ale! All around good balance, complexity, and robustness of fruity/spicy yeast and malt flavors; and very smooth to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

16oz can. Unfiltered thick red-brown body. Sugary and sweet, sort of an amber-dubbel. Tasty, relatively mild, at least for a beer with such pronounced Belgian yeast notes. Thick malt tones, cherry amber notes. A pretty solid beer, a decent US representation.

Sample at the DBLDP on 09/02/2012: This brew pours a clear dark amber color with a medium light beige head that dissipates quickly. Short strings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of malt and dark fruit. Medium body with flavors of caramel malt, ripe fruit and yeast. The finish is sweet with an earthy malt aftertaste. Slightly above average overall.

16 ounce can courtesy of northernbrews. Thanks! Pours a clear dark amber color with a large frothy tan head. Good head retention. Aroma of maple, soy, caramel, wood and dark fruits. The taste is caramel, treacle, anise, herbal notes. Medium bodied, lingering bitterness, low carbonation. Weird beer, and I’m not quite sure whether or not I like it.

16 oz can. Pours a clear cola color with an off-white head. Aroma has yeasty clove, nutty aromas, earthiness, mildly tart apple. Flavor is an interesting blend of nuttiness and earthiness with apple or pear, cloves, hinting at caramel and dark fruits. Takes a moment, but the nuttiness with the crisp palate and hint of fruit and yeastiness really works.
