The 'ordinary' Belgian blonde in the Driope series, brewed in Oudenaarde with - apart from pale barley malt - wheat and spelt. Thickly, 'relief'-forming cobweb-like lacing, very mousy, egg-white, stable but slowly opening head, initially cristal clear pure 'old gold' robe, shifting to a misty apricot-hued gold with sediment. Aroma of white bread slices, soggy chicken food, pear, halfripe banana, minerals, strawbales, drying grass, old apple peel, sharpish carbon dioxide, dust, dried out lemon rind that has lost much of its fragrance, green garden weed touch, dried lemonbalm, old textile. Sweetish onset, some banana ester but equally strong apple and pear notes as well, vague unripe peach, sourish undertone being accentuated by rather sharp, but not overly 'painful' carbonation, very minerally and crisp; smooth, light body. Cereally and lightly white-bready malt profile, soapy wheat edge as well as a spicy-grainy spelt accent, fruity notes and a light dash of residual sugars connecting with a slightly bittering finish, eventually turning floral (lemonbalm, vervain) and even a bit resinous and glueish; this hop bitterness increases a bit in the tail, but the malt slickness and fruity notes still remain dominant. Balanced as any classic Belgian ale, easily drinkable and quenching, spring- or summer-like blonde, with the hop bitterness ending up a bit above average for the style; run of the mill, but technically alright and at least not overly sweet, even carrying a surprisingly lasting, resiny hop bitterness in its last breath. One of those countless attempts at producing 'new' beers in Belgium that remain stuck in mediocrity, but drinkable enough with an extra point for being more confidently hoppy than average in this style.
