Young’s London Gold is key member of the Young’s range. As the name suggests it’s a golden beer with a refreshing taste.

London Gold is available as a cask beer and also as a bottle conditioned beer.

The bottled conditioned variant is an unpasteurised, living beer, matured in the bottle for a fuller, more complex, multi-dimensional, fresher taste. With no artificial carbonation, the only fizz is the natural effervescence created by fermentation.

Cask at the Old Cock Inn, Harpenden. Slightly murky gold with a large white head. Tastes of old straw that dirty sweaty horses have spent a restless and possibly incontinent night rolling in. More than a hint of bad homebrew. There might have been a long-deceased mouldy lemon in it, but that’s the best I can offer. Really grim. Can’t believe the dross that Wells are selling under the once-great Youngs name. And to add insult to injury I had it in one of the all-too-numerous shitty Wells’ pubs with their shitty slow service and shittily conditioned beers. Wells are just shit through and through, aren’t they?

Bottle. Aroma is metallic, stale, yeast. Clear yellow colour, no head. Taste is strongly metallic, with light hint of pale malt and some complementary astringency. Poor.

Pours a slighty hazy golden color with decent white frothy head. The aroma is fruity and hoppy, not too strong. The taste is decently bitter with some fruits present. Smooth and easily drinkable. Nice.

Light gold, not much head. Floral aroma, soapy taste, bitter palette. Prefer Young’s Bitter by a country mile, but this is drinkable if unbalanced.

Cask at The Travellers Rest, London Victoria. Pours clear dark golden with an off white head. Aroma of light malt and hops. Flavour is light to light moderate sweet and bitter. Nice citra coming out on the palate. Light bodied with soft carbonation.

Bottle conditioned.

Cask at the Cannie Man, Bracknell. Amber with a tight white head; floral aroma with some underlying malts; grainy body with a sweet orange fruit taste and a light bitterness before a dry biscuity finish.
