Hammerhead

Hammerhead, the first bottled IPA in South Africa, is a well-balanced IPA with a distinct hop character that imparts mild citrus and pine aromas with significant bitterness, balanced with a solid malt backbone. It is continually hopped, in a similar fashion to that of Dogfish Head’s IPA’s, which establishes a deep seated solid hop character in all aspects of this beer.
Toffee and caramel are characteristic of the malts used in Hammerhead. The working name on this beer was Hammer(ed) (Hop)Head and probably describes it well.
Malts: Pale, Various Crystal Malts
Hops: Galena, Cascade and Centennial

Poured from 340mL bottle. Mostly clear, orangey brown with off-white head. Aroma is quite dank like a wet rug, a mix of bready caramel malt and mild grassy and tropical hops. Taste is quite subdued, finish is quick, bitterness lingers a short time, but really doesn’t give a full mouthfeel and is a bit too watery.

Slightly aged sample Nearly no head over clear, copper-orange beer, yet visually well-carbonated. Floral nose, but also a bit solvent. Again (as the APA) watercolour paint. Dried citrus fruit, cookie malts. Hoppy, dried hops, citrussy (hops) flavours, semi-dried grapes. Finish stresses grapey hops. Medium bodied, quite slick, bit sticky feel. Quite OK - I’m sure that it must be pretty outstanding fresh. Txs to Mathieu!

Hazy and very dull amber-tan. The aroma is dull hops, hint of phenols. Malty character, light hop, fairly yeasty. OK maybe as an amber.
