Dan Schlegel and Frank Hammack’s hazy IPA took first place over more than 100 entries in Hop Idol 2019, our annual homebrew contest held each winter. This beer is very tropical and features Sabro hops, the first time we’ve brewed with them at Reuben’s Brews. The Mecca Grade pilsner malt – from a local Oregon maltster – also adds a nice bready depth to the malt profile.

16 ounce can into tulip glass, canned on 8/22/2019. Pours fairly hazy deep golden amber color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and fluffy white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice dense spotty foamy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big tangerine, orange juice, grapefruit, lemon, lime, peach, pear, apricot, passion fruit, mango, honeydew melon, coconut, citrus peel/rind, cedar, mint, peppercorn, pine, wheat, cracker, white bread dough, toasted biscuit, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of citrus/fruity/tropical/earthy hops and bready malt notes; with big strength. Taste of big tangerine, orange juice, grapefruit, lemon, lime, peach, pear, apricot, passion fruit, mango, honeydew melon, coconut, citrus peel/rind, cedar, mint, peppercorn, pine, wheat, cracker, white bread dough, toasted biscuit, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness. Light-moderate pine, citrus peel/rind, herbal, floral, woody, grassy, peppery bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of tangerine, orange juice, grapefruit, lemon, lime, peach, pear, apricot, passion fruit, mango, honeydew melon, coconut, citrus peel/rind, cedar, mint, peppercorn, pine, wheat, cracker, white bread dough, toasted biscuit, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/tropical/earthy hops and bready malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance, and no lingering hop astringency after the finish. Fairly crisp finishing. Light-moderate increasing dryness from lingering bitterness. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/bready/grainy, and sticky/resinous/rindy balanced mouthfeel that is great. Minimal warming alcohol for 7.6%. Overall this is an awesome hazy IPA. All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/tropical/earthy hops and bready malt flavors; very smooth, easy, and fairly crisp to drink with the modestly bitter/resinous/drying finish; nicely soft and not overly aggressive. Awesome Sabro hop showcase. Very vibrant, juicy, dank, and earthy hops; with a nice pale/wheat malt backbone. Minimal residual sweetness with crisp resin dryness. A really enjoyable offering, and well made style example.

The Aromas are Citrus and some Pine resin hubs with some straw. Flavors are very much like nose a little more sweet than bitter upfront and a bit of growing bitter at the end. Citrus is strong with a hint of medicinal in the Finish. Good carbonation and body. Decent beer.

Light, crisp, little juicy. Well done. Looking forward to Maddie Moo winning a contest like this one day.
