Can’t you smell that smell? It’s the smell of freedom. Like some sort of…unrestricted avian that just can’t change and may leave here tomorrow. It’s that Sweet smell of Home; an Alabama wind that swept through and for some unexplained reason took Tuesday with it. Yup, you got that right. This orange hued and hazy Wheat IPA is jammed with as much hops as this beer description is with song references that are a poorly written (we’re up to five so far). With a mix of five different hops, a late addition of hibiscus and jasmine, then another twenty pounds of dry hops you may need to take a sip, take three steps and come back. This deceivingly light/medium bodied brew is bright, dry and dominated by American hop aromas that are layered over tropical floral notes and a faint candied citrus peel. It’s anything but simple, man. That was number seven, but you didn’t think we would end this without shouting, “PLAY FREE BIRD!!!” did you?

16 ounce prowler into signature tulip glass, filled on 6/9/2019. Pours slightly hazy medium golden amber color with a 2 finger dense and rocky off white head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice dense foamy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big tangerine, red grapefruit, lemon, lime, peach, pear, pineapple, apricot, passion fruit, papaya, mango, honeydew melon, coconut, guava, hibiscus, jasmine tea, blueberry, citrus peel/zest, wood, peppercorn, pine, wheat, cracker, white bread dough, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of citrus/fruity/tropical/fairly earthy hops, hibiscus, jasmine, and moderate pale/wheat malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big tangerine, red grapefruit, lemon, lime, peach, pear, pineapple, apricot, passion fruit, papaya, mango, honeydew melon, coconut, guava, hibiscus, jasmine tea, blueberry, citrus peel/zest, wood, peppercorn, pine, wheat, cracker, white bread dough, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness. Light-moderate pine, citrus peel/rind, herbal, floral, woody, grassy, peppery bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of tangerine, red grapefruit, lemon, lime, peach, pear, pineapple, apricot, passion fruit, papaya, mango, honeydew melon, coconut, guava, hibiscus, jasmine tea, blueberry, citrus peel/zest, wood, peppercorn, pine, wheat, cracker, white bread dough, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/tropical/fairly earthy hops, hibiscus, jasmine, and moderate pale/wheat malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance, and no lingering hop astringency after the finish. Light-moderate increasing dryness from lingering bitterness. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately bready/grainy/sticky, and fairly crisp/resinous/rindy balanced mouthfeel that is great. Minimal warming alcohol for 6.9%. Overall this is an awesome IPA. All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/tropical/fairly earthy hops, hibiscus, jasmine, and moderate pale/wheat malt flavors; very smooth and fairly crisp/refreshing to drink with the modestly bitter/resinous/drying finish; not overly aggressive. Feels like Mosaic, Sabro, Simcoe, Amarillo, and Centennial. Super juicy/vibrant, and fairly dank/earthy hops/tea; with a great clean pale/wheat malt backbone. Minimal residual sweetness with crisp resin dryness. A really enjoyable offering, and impressive style example as expected.
