A welcomed darkness has fallen upon our flagship Double IPA. Pouring black as midnight with a hefty tan head, yet conjuring the aromas of fresh citrus layered with the soft tropical fruit and candied orange flavors you know and love in Boomsauce there appears to be something sinister at work. By summoning the smoothest black malts available to mortal men we’ve created a delicate roasted malt backbone with a slightly sweet and remarkably clean finish. From the depths of darkness the Doomsauce emerges.

Dark brown coloured body with a very thick, rich brown coloured head, about four centimetres tall, microfoamed that leaves a nice lace on the sides as it fades. Aroma of roasted malt, crisp citrus fruits, soft flowers and pine and a dash of resin at the end - quite hoppy in the nose without any alcohol presence. Medium-bodied; Very rich roasted malt and light oatmeal notes show at first with a slight peat and very subtle smoky note, with only a dash of citrus fruits and grapefruit here from the hops, with much more resinous and alpha acid hop notes on the piney side that poke free from the malts. Aftertaste is dry, quite malty, but balanced and enjoyable with a slight alcohol warmth, but seemingly at around 7,0 per cent-nice! Overall, a rich, but very enjoyable, balanced beer with a good dose of hops that bitter nicely, but still are drinkable and nuanced with some of the alcohol hidden - very nice to have - especially going up to the North East (Massachusetts and Maine) in two days, recommended for those who like this style and miss it! (like me!) I sampled this sixteen ounce, pint-sized can, purchased from Gettysburg Beer Mart in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania on 31-January-2023 for US$3,99, canned on 31-August-2022 and sampled at my house here in Washington on 25-June-2023.

16 ounce can. Barely translucent dark brown color. Large frothy tan head is enduring. Spotty lacing. Roasted malt aroma hints at spicy hops. Flavor upfront is bittersweet chocolate, spicy hops and resiny pine. Tobacco, coffee and dark roasted walnuts. Perhaps a bit of charred wood as well. Tasty.

Pours a nice near black from a can, opaque but not muddy. Aroma is a little roasty, some resinous pine, but light. Similar flavor, not a bold statement. Good beer.

Can (8/26/20) pour from Total Wine & More, Burlington. Appearance is opaque black with a few light floaties, trace sparkle, finger-width beige foamy head with good retention and mild soapy lacing. Aroma is deep roasted malts with pine. Taste follows aroma with late vague nuttiness. Mouthfeel is light side of light-to-medium bodied with smooth, frothy texture, soft carbonation and finish as taste. Overall, elements are here but hop bite is a bit muted, perhaps somewhat related to age? OK.

Light brownish black pour. Nose is char and pine. Tastes of char, roasted malt, chocolate, pine, plum and boozy. Medium bodied kinda chewy. Pleasant change of pace.

16 ounce can into tulip glass, canned on 1/28/2019. Pours hazy/opaque dark brown/black color with a 2 finger dense and rocky khaki head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a large cap that lasts. Thick foamy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big tangerine, red grapefruit, lemon, lime, peach, pineapple, apricot, passion fruit, papaya, mango, melon, guava, black currant, blueberry, citrus peel/rind, wood, peppercorn, pine, dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, biscuit dough, toasted dark bread, and herbal/floral/grassy/roasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of citrus/fruity/tropical/earthy hops and black/roast/bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big tangerine, red grapefruit, lemon, lime, peach, pineapple, apricot, passion fruit, papaya, mango, melon, guava, black currant, blueberry, citrus peel/rind, wood, peppercorn, pine, dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, biscuit dough, toasted dark bread, and herbal/floral/grassy/roasted earthiness. Light-moderate pine, citrus peel/rind, herbal, floral, woody, grassy, peppery hops; and roast/charred bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of tangerine, red grapefruit, lemon, lime, peach, pineapple, apricot, passion fruit, papaya, mango, melon, guava, black currant, blueberry, citrus peel/rind, wood, peppercorn, pine, dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, biscuit dough, toasted dark bread, and herbal/floral/grassy/roasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/tropical/earthy hops and black/roast/bready malt flavors; with a great hop/char malt/bitterness balance; and no acrid/astringent hop/roast flavors after the finish. Light-moderate increasing dryness from lingering hop/char bitterness. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, creamy/silky/bready/sticky, and fairly chalky/resinous/rindy balanced mouthfeel that is great. Minimal warming alcohol for 7.8%. Overall this is an awesome black DIPA. All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/tropical/earthy hops and black/roast/bready malt flavors; very smooth and easy to drink for the ABV, with the modestly bitter/resin/charred/drying finish; not overly aggressive/charred on roast. Awesome Ella, Mosaic, Falcolners Flight, Amarillo profile. Extremely juicy and fairly dank/earthy hops; with a perfectly balanced wheat, oat, black, roasted malt backbone. Minimal residual sweetness from lingering resin dryness. A really enjoyable offering, and impressive style example. Hoping for this style to make a comeback sometime.
