Farmhouse Ale with Boysenberries.- This is the second collaboration we've brewed with Penrose, both times one of us ended up spending an obscene amount of time in traffic driving between Geneva, IL. and Indianapolis, IN.. However, we feel like the drive is worth it to get to brew such delicious beers together.

Crazy clear and beautiful purple/violet/magenta coloured body with almost no head at all (a centimetre of a pure white head shows up and fades very quickly afterwards) with some odd glows from the yeast when poured out entirely from the can. Aroma of grass, flowers, herbal graininess with a dose of tart berries towards the end - but this is very drying and incredibly floral. Light-bodied; Strong grassy, hay and lightly yeastie flavours show at first with a touch of tart fruits, some berries, a dose of lemons and citrus (in terms of acidity) and ending with a soft sweetness which sticks out from the tart and fruity nature at the end. Aftertaste shows the fruits, the grassy and herbal qualities and ends with some sweetness from caster sugar and a light tart funk that shows almost a kettling sourness instead of the light beries. Overall, a nice and enjoyable beer that almost hits more as a cider because of the light body than a beer, but this is interesting and complex, even as a thin product. I sampled this sixteen ounce, pint-sized can, purchased from Greenville Beer Exchange in Greenville, South Carolina on 31-May-2018 for US$4,29 sampled almost a year later on 25-April-2019 at home in Washington.

16 ounce can into tulip glass; no can dating, but is a recent release. Pours moderately hazy deep ruby red, light pink/purple color with a 2 finger fairly dense and fluffy light pink head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty foamy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of juicy/lightly tart/tangy boysenberry, blackberry, raspberry, fruit skin/seeds, plum, melon, red apple, pear, red grape, peppercorn, light clove, wheat, cracker, white bread dough, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of berries, fruity/spicy yeast, moderate pale/wheat malts, and light earthy hop notes; with solid strength. Taste of juicy/lightly tart/tangy boysenberry, blackberry, raspberry, fruit skin/seeds, plum, melon, red apple, pear, red grape, peppercorn, light clove, wheat, cracker, white bread dough, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Light-moderate peppery yeast spiciness; light herbal/grassy bitterness and fruit tang/tartness on the finish. Lingering notes of berries, fruit skin/seeds, plum, melon, red apple, pear, red grape, peppercorn, light clove, wheat, cracker, white bread dough, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of berries, fruity/spicy yeast, moderate pale/wheat malts, and light earthy hop flavors; with a great malt//bitter/spiciness balance; and zero cloying/astringent flavors after the finish. Light-moderate increasing dryness from bitter/spiciness and carbonation. Medium-high carbonation and light-medium body; with a very smooth, moderately crisp, bready/grainy, fairly sticky, and lightly tangy/tannic balanced mouthfeel that is fantastic. Zero warming alcohol for 7.5%. Overall this is a delicious fruited saison! All around nice complexity, robustness, and balance of berries, fruity/spicy yeast, moderate pale/wheat malts, and light earthy hop flavors; very smooth, crisp, and refreshing to drink for the ABV; with the modestly spicy/drying finish. Great balance between berries and saison yeast complexity; with a solid pale/wheat malt backbone, and minimal residual sweetness. The fruit does not feel jammy in any way, which was fine; because it still feels like a saison, instead of a fruit beer as a result. A very enjoyable offering, and spot on style example.

Can. Pours a near clear red with a near white head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a nice boysenberry note with some flora and a bit of sweet grains underlying. Flavor has lots of boysenberry and hay with some flora and grains backing.

Pint can, Wine Warehouse. Pours murky deep pink with a pint head. Aroma is lemon, yeast, dust, green leaves. Flavor is tart berry, green leaves, lemon zest, a little funk. Zippy carbonation. Interesting, not great.
