Erg goed bier !

One of the many barrel aged variations on Nest's imperial stout interpretation, this time on aquavit, the Scandinavian spiced liquor popular in Sweden and Norway. Bottle from Fontana in Sint-Niklaas. Pale yellowish beige, moussy, dense head lacing in a few streaks, opening partially in the middle over a black beer with hazy mahogany brown edges visible for about a quarter of an inch off the edge. Aroma of wet black chocolate bars, toffee, coffee grounds, aquavit indeed (i.e. a gin-like alcohol odour spiced with caraway, cumin-like but a bit more herbal and less 'meaty'), the beer's own basic aniseed remaining subtle enough but becoming as good as indistinguishable from the caraway provided by the aquavit, soaking wet wood, liquorice, damp earth, cigars, dried fig, elderberries, tea, brown bread dough, bayleaf. Sweetish onset with fig- and ripe blackberry-like notes, some red apple, sourish undertone from roasted grains, quite spicy from the start with a softish, finely tingling carbonation and smooth, bit resinous mouthfeel, feeling a tad thinner than its 10% ABV. Very (wal)nutty, bit caramelly and eventually (brown) toasty malt body, bittersweet with the bitterness increasing towards the end, becoming quite roasted and coffeeish; meanwhile some esters and phenols dance on top, with the basic beer's aniseed still noticeable yet in a vague, 'blurred' kind of way. The finish provides drying, slightly astringent wood tannins and the expected aquavit flavour, though - in comparison with e.g. the rum barrel aged edition of this beer - its contribution seems to remain relatively limited at least flavour-wise; it does, however, add a lot of hot, peppery booziness (mixing with the port-like 'finishing' qualities of the basic beer) and a touch of caraway spiciness which blends in rather well, while down below, the roasted bitterness blends equally well with a spicy, bit peppery hop note. Earthy, bready yeastiness remains as well, but for a Belgian style imperial stout, if you regard it as a kind of regional sub-concept of the style, this does not really bother me - guess experience, also with this particular brand, taught me to take this into consideration. Rich, very Belgian beer but a hefty, demanding stout at the same time - this goes for all the Dead Man's Hand editions of course, only this one distinguishes itself a bit by seemingly being able to tie together all the different factors in a more 'united' way than some of the other editions do. The cognac version, however, still tops them all for me.
