Tremble before Apollyon, The Destroyer, for herein is a beer that requires careful handling. Produced using a technique that amplifies the intense apple/pear fruitiness of Arcadia's house English-style yeast, the result is a straw-colored Belgian-style strong golden ale that hides its strength carefully. Obscured by intense honey notes, hints of cotton candy, fresh-baked bread, and a wickedly dry, crisp body, we took to calling it Apollyon in homage to the Belgian tradition of naming beers after "devilish" figures. Unlike the king of locusts, the only truly dangerous part of Apollyon is how enjoyable and refreshing it is.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 1/20/2017. Pours slightly hazy medium golden yellow color with a small dense white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of big lemon, pear, orange, peach, apricot, apple, pepper, light banana/clove, honey, candi sugar, biscuit, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of fruity/spicy yeast, pale malt, and light earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of big lemon, pear, orange, peach, apricot, apple, pepper, light banana/clove, honey, candi sugar, biscuit, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Light-moderate peppery/spicy and lightly tart/tangy yeast on the finish. Lingering notes of lemon, pear, orange, peach, apricot, apple, pepper, light banana/clove, honey, candi sugar, biscuit, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/spicy yeast, pale malt, and light earthy hops flavors; with a great malt/spiciness balance, and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light-moderate dryness from spicy/tangy yeast, increasing through the glass. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately crisp/grainy/bready, and lightly sticky/tangy balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Zero warming alcohol for 9.3%. Overall this is a very nice Belgian strong pale ale. All around nice complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/spicy yeast, pale malt, and light earthy hop flavors; very smooth, crisp, clean, and pretty refreshing to drink for the big ABV. Pretty unique from using their house English yeast strain, but it still hits the style character really well. A very enjoyable offering.

When they told me this was a golden ale, I said yippie. But then I tasted it. This is strong ale fer sure and the taste does not hide the alky. Even tho there is a tart aroma and the taste does have some tartness in there, make no mistake, it a barley wine in nature. A barley wine that needs some aging fer sure. Each first taste has a tartness but then it goes clying sweet gaggy. Not too sure what to think about this,. Look I am not a barley wine or wheat wine fan, but if you are try this. Not impressed. Unique beer experience. Overall, almost like poorly made homemade dago wine.
