For the second Rye-on-Rye release, we drew inspiration from the famous New Orleans cocktail, the Sazerac. The official recipe is composed of rye whiskey, absinthe or Herbsaint, a sugar cube and bitters all garnished with a lemon peel. To translate this classic cocktail into a beer, we brewed batches of the base rye beer that received spice additions mimicking bitters as well as lemon peel during the boil. The resulting wort was fermented with our house Scottish ale yeast before being aged in freshly emptied Templeton Rye barrels.

Opening with strong aromas of rye whiskey, toasted oak, vanilla bean and cinnamon, Rye-on-Rye X – Sazerac is full bodied and spicy. Rye malt and whiskey character lead in the flavor giving way to hints of black pepper, anise and subtle citrus from the lemon peel all closing with a sweet, warming finish. Rye-on-Rye X – Sazerac is 11.8 ABV and 29 IBUs.

Bottle. Pours a clear deep amber with some sediment and a light brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has lots of rye and whiskey with a bit of lemon underlying. Flavor has a combination of rye and whiskey with light lemon and spice backing.

Bottle from the co-op. Deep murky Amber with a pretty high towering fluffy head that subsides to a nice cap of beige head. Woody earthy Aroma emphasizing the barrel aging, raisins, leather. Taste bring some Savory elements a little bit of the alcohol in the form of tingle, late warmth, more raisins and pit fruit. Little of the Rye comes through exceptpt that it's kind of a dark bready ale. Changes with temperature, for the better .

Bottle. A- Lemon cleaner, spices, rye whisky. A- Dark mahogany color, clear liquid, off white head. T- Spices, booze, lemon peel, potpurri, cinnamon, black pepper. P- Full body, average texture, average carbonation, complex finish. O- The original rye on rye is still far and away the best. That said, this was pretty good. Tastes more like a cocktail than a beer. Lots of spice. Almost overload. Good but almost too much. You feel all 12%.

Capped 750 shared by Marcus. Pours brandy color with a slight beige head. Aroma of rye and vanilla and something spice. Med ++ body. Flavor is rye, whiskey, and moderately "hot" spice- like pepper. Having trouble parsing the flavors, but they are nice. Finishes undry, but the rye helps tone that down. It’s very different, but I find it enjoyable.

750 ml caged & corked bottle poured into a plastic hotel cup. Mostly clear reddish amber with off-white head. Aromas of whiskey, oak, spice, citrus peel. Tastes of whiskey, caramel, citrus, oak, spice. Medium body with a dry and warm finish. Like the base beer but couldn’t get into this combo.

Bottle, a hazy reddish amber small beige head strong sharp eye woody bite in the malt flavors. Don’t get much hop flavors or bitterness. Some spice and biizy notes. A big agressive beer.
