12 ounce bottle from Elmer’s Escanaba. Odd name. Black with a large foamy tan head. Good retention. Aroma of roasted malt and citrus. The taste is roasted malt, chocolate, coffee, citrus. Medium bodied, lingering bitterness.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 3/14/2016. Pours nearly opaque dark brown color with a 2 finger dense and fluffy khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice dense soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, mango, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, chocolate, cocoa, toasted dark bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of citrus/tropical hops and moderate dark/bready malt notes; with good strength. Taste of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, mango, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, chocolate, cocoa, toasted dark bread, light nuttiness, and floral/grassy earthiness. Moderate amount of pine/citrus rind and light roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, mango, lemon/orange peel, pine, chocolate, cocoa, toasted dark bread, and floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of juicy citrus/tropical hops and moderate dark/bready malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance and zero astringent flavors after the finish. Light dryness from bitterness that increases through the glass. Medium carbonation and medium-plus body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/bready/sticky, and slightly chalky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very nice Black DIPA. All around good complexity, robustness, and balance of juicy citrus/tropical hops and moderate dark/bready malt flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink for the ABV. A very enjoyable offering.
