I passed two crows on a branch in a field, still and calm. They seemed natural and out of place, all at once. Two Crow Black Sugar Stout is like that; black as night with something hard to define in its’ nature. Dark Malts, noble hops and two kinds of house caramelized MI beet sugars combine to create a beautifully balanced high gravity stout.

Strong stout with caramelized Michigan sugar. Not overly sweet or heavy for the ABV.

Bottle. Deep opaque brown/black body, thin beige head. Nose roasty with burnt sugar bittersweetness. Body bitter and tannic with burnt sugars, finishing with a long, bitter to almost acrid woody acidity. Middling.

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, not bottle dating. Pours nearly opaque dark brown/black color with a 1-2 finger dense tan head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, brown sugar, molasses, toasted dark bread, light smoke/char, light licorice/raisin, herbal, and roast/toasted earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of roast/bready malt, dark sugar, and light earthy hop/fruity yeast notes; with solid strength. Taste of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, brown sugar, molasses, toasted dark bread, light smoke/char, light licorice/raisin, herbal, and roast/toasted earthiness. Light-moderate herbal/roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, brown sugar, molasses, toasted dark bread, light smoke/char, light dark fruit/herbal, and roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of roast/bready malt, dark sugar, and light earthy hop/fruity yeast flavors; with a great roasted bitter/sweet balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy, and lightly sticky/chalky balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very nice English stout style. All around good complexity, robustness, and balance of roast/bready malt, dark sugar, and light earthy hop/fruity yeast flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink. A very enjoyable offering.
