Take a trip to the lost island of Porter Rico, where the cacao and coconut live in harmony and frolic the sandy shores. Our island getaway takes the form of a dark, chocolatey beer, with a balancing sweetness, medium body, and lingering mouthfeel. Intense toasted coconut rides the trade winds for a truly exotic, yet comfortingly familiar pint.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a black color with orange highlight and a small foamy tan head that faded quickly and left minimal lacing. The aroma was malty with notes of anise and coconut. The flavor was bitter and sour with almost vinegar followed by roasty malts, black food coloring and anise. Long finish. Medium body. Not good.

Bottle: Nearly black....rubied brown with a thick tan head. Coconut oil and chocolate aroma. Taste is coconut and vanilla.......like coconut husks and sun tan lotion. Earthy, nutty bitter....oily and slick. Interesting and different.

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, bottled on 11/23/2015. Pours lightly hazy very dark brown color with a 2 finger dense and rocky khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Nice dense soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Great appearance. Aromas of big coconut, milk chocolate, cocoa, caramel, toffee, brown sugar, toast, dark bread, and herbal/roasted earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of coconut and dark/roasted malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big coconut, milk chocolate, cocoa, caramel, toffee, brown sugar, toast, dark bread, and herbal/roasted earthiness. Light herbal/roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of coconut, milk chocolate, cocoa, caramel, toffee, brown sugar, toast, dark bread, and herbal/roasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice complexity, robustness, and balance of coconut and dark/roasted malt flavors; with a nice bitterness/sweetness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, creamy/silky, and slightly sticky/chalky mouthfeel that is awesome. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is an awesome coconut porter style. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of coconut and dark/roasted malt flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink. A highly enjoyable offering.
