12 ounce bottle into pint glass, no bottle dating. This was highly over carbonated when I opened it, so it took a while to pour initially. I let most of the extra carbonation diffuse out by swirling in the glass. Zero notes of any infection. Pours dense pitch black color with a 2-3 finger dense and rocky dark brown head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Nice dense soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, toffee, molasses, toast, dark bread, light smoke/char, herbal, floral, and roasted earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt and moderate earthy hop notes; with solid strength. Taste of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, toffee, toast, dark bread, light smoke/char, herbal, floral, and roasted earthiness. Moderate amount of herbal/roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, toast, dark bread, light smoke/char, and herbal/roasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Nice robustness, complexity, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and moderate earthy hop flavors; with a nice roasted bitterness/sweetness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a very smooth, creamy, moderately silky, and lightly sticky/chalky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a nice American stout. All around good robustness, complexity, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and moderate earthy hop flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink. A nicely enjoyable offering.

tap at the brewpub last summer - Pours very dark brown with a tan head. It smells of roast malt and chocolate. The flavor is similar with ample hops and dark roast bitterness. The roast character lingers pleasantly on the palate of this bubbly, medium bodied brew.

Sample from a growler at the Super Terrific Stout Tasting on Feb 16th. Two Stouts whose labels feature an axe being wielded. Cool. This beer is blackish-brown with a medium and foamy light brown head that diminishes slowly. Rings of lacing on the glass. The aroma consists mainly of coffee along with hints of roasted malt and dark chocolate. Medium, smooth body with a tasty chocolate and coffee character, along with light hops and malt. The finish is mild and roasty with a mocha aftertaste. Better than expected, I would try this again.

On tap at Schmohz. Deep chocolate-brown body, thin persistent tan (almost ochre) head. Milk chocolate and toast in the aroma, which was hard to detect when the beer was cold. The operative word for the flavor is "chocolate!"; the emphasis on chocolate made this very porter-like. Besides the chocolate, there was a hint of dark fruit/caramel to go along with toasted notes and earthy hops. A touch chalky and bitter. Medium-bodied, rich, and not too complex. A solid beer, but I’ll have to try this side-by-side with their porter to work out the differences.
