Imperial Red IPA Aged in Bourbon Barrels

What do you get when a big, bold imperial red IPA meets an oak bourbon barrel? A palate stunner that’ll send your senses spinning or, as we like to call it, Dankwood. Rich caramel notes emerge from the depths of the IPA, highlighting strong malt character while the bourbon barrel-aging develops the complexity. A dank, sticky and slightly sweet sipper, Dankwood is the perfect alchemy of wood and hops.

Pours deep mahogany into a tulip. Off-white head with excellent retention recedes to coat surface leaving trailing sheets. Caramel, aged oak and dark pit fruit aromas. Sweet with hot oaked caramel and bitter resin upfront turning to vanilla and bitter earth in the lasting finish. It's been a while, but it reminds me of an naked arrogant bastard.

Bottle from La Riviera. Pours bright, clear, ruddy copper with a creamy/bubbly beige head. Aroma is sticky pine, roasty malt. Med + body. Flavor is pine, somewhat roasty malt (amberish), a touch of bourbon, some wood notes. It’s strongly flavored, but the flavors aren’t working well together for me. Interesting tho.

Usually the words Founders and dank score points with me. Combined let’s see. A four pack was purchased a week ago at the nearby Cellar venue. A chilled 12 oz bottle goes into my Buffalo Bayou tulip. Great delivery in my estimation, dark, dark red finished by a strong tawny brown head. The nose is inviting, cedar pine, citrus and toffee. But I am here for the taste. My goodness, it is mighty fine. Grain forward, caramel, oak, a little lemon. Moderately bitter. Alcohol, yes it is around. Danky, I get it. Right in my wheelhouse, good job Founders. 6/16/18

Bottle from Brewcraft at home. Translucent deep ruby brown copper pour with sticky fine white head. Aroma is what you’d expect from the description - vanilla bourbon wood, dank dank hops, big honey malt with a bit of rye spice? Very nice. Taste is huge bitter dank hops with a sharp resinous bite, vanilla, alcohol, wood, rye, and honey. Huge and boozy. Smooth rich palate. Delicious. Basically what it says on the tin - add a well executed version of it, as Founders always does. Would definitely get again. Had again July 3, 2017 - delicious. Like hoppy boozy marshmallow. Raised 4.0->4.1

12 oz bottle thanks to Uncle Doug. Aroma is coconut, toffee, wood, raisin, citrus, vanilla, earth, booze. Pours hazy brown with amber highlights and a one finger beige head with good retention and some lace. Taste is moderately bitter, moderately sweet with flavors matching the aroma; pithy bitterness lingers after the finish. Wow, I'm impressed. This is tasty AF. I'm usually skeptical about barrel aged IPAs, but this proves that it can be done, and with finesse to boot.
