Imperial Red IPA Aged in Bourbon Barrels
What do you get when a big, bold imperial red IPA meets an oak bourbon barrel? A palate stunner that’ll send your senses spinning or, as we like to call it, Dankwood. Rich caramel notes emerge from the depths of the IPA, highlighting strong malt character while the bourbon barrel-aging develops the complexity. A dank, sticky and slightly sweet sipper, Dankwood is the perfect alchemy of wood and hops.

Bottle from Boise Co-op. I think I'd go more for an Amrrican stronge ale here, but its shaping up pretty damn nicely. Dark brown pour, one finger beige head, lasts a while. Aroma is dark, woidy and fruity. Taste brings some molasses, marshmallow, , raisins, and plenty of alcohol heat. Well rounded, and delicious, sipper.

Bottle. Pours a clear deep amber with a tan head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has earthy pine and resin with some sweet grains and a bit of bourbon underlying. Flavor has bourbon and caramel with some grass and light pine underlying.

Sampled from a bottle this beer poured a cloudy brown color with a large foamy tan head that lingered forever and left decent lacing. The aroma was wood, caramel, pine, resin and alcohol. The flavor was wood, toffee, yeast, pine abd a bit of booziness. Long finish. Moderately full bodied. Boozy but not excessively so for being 12%

Bottle from Craft Brewed. Pours a clear, mahogany brown color with a finger of foam that dissipates to a ring. Great lacing throughout. Aromas of dried tangerine peel, grapefruit zest, toasted caramel and faint vanilla. Smooth on the palate, abv hidden fairly well until the finish. Lots of woody oak character, caramel, vanilla and citrus mid-palate. Big hop bite from the mid-palate with lingering bitterness. The finish has bitter pine, vanilla oak and citrus. I wanted to hate this (I was not a fan at all of last year's Doom release) but this is really good, the big bitterness pushes back against the sweetness and the booze is hidden fairly well. Solid beer.

12 oz bottle. Pours deep amber with some fine particles and an off-white head. Oak, a bit of bourbon, and citrus, berry aroma. Flavor blends grapefruit citrus hops with oak, bourbon, vanilla, molasses, toffee. The barrel aging is both transformative and restrained. Everything blends together very nicely, and this is an impressive beer.

Draft pour at High Side. Poured a dark, ruby redish brown color with a small tan head. Aroma was a huge amount of booze, woody vanilla. Flavor was bourbon, vanilla. Roasted malts. Interesting. Decent, though maybe just a little too boozy for it's own good.

Was prepard to rail against barrel-aging the sublime reDANKulous, but damned if it doesn’t make for a delicious beer. Not quite as nuanced and entrancing as the original, but still an amazing pint. Bourbon stakes out a rather large claim in the center of the brew, taking away from the layered caramel, pine, and citrus of the unaged version, but those notes are still there, along with vanilla and woodsy oak bitterness on the fade. Beautiful ruddy red pour with an enormous off-white head and ample lace. Creamy, thick, and remarkably smooth for a 12.2% beer. Not an improvement, but impressive nonetheless.
