We start in the brewhouse with our radically traditional recipe for Anchor Porter, which we've been brewing since 1972. We end up in the cellar, where we add Four Barrel Flash-Chilled Coffee -- developed with Anchor especially for this beer -- during secondary fermentation. The coffee used is brewed hot, then flash-chilled within 10 seconds. This proprietary method ensures the vital aromatics and key acids of a great cup of coffee are captured and preserved. The result is a rich, smooth Porter with a roasty malt backbone, a bold coffee aroma and complex layers of chocolate, nuts and spices.

Pour is a black with a huge tan head. Aroma is a minor coffee but a big bitter bakers chocolate. Flavor is pretty much the same. A almost not there coffee but a big dry backers chocolate. Finish is bone dry and leaves a nice roast on the tongue. Kind of disappointed with the lack of coffee but the chocolate malt made up for it.

Roasted coffee and lightly sweet sugary notes in the initial aroma. Dark pour with a tall, creamy tan head. Flavor is roasted coffee, mocha, lightly earthy, rich dark malts. Finish has a good chunk of bitter coffee and bittersweet cocoa. Very well made.

Bottle, A huge coffee aroma which was a nice surprise. Bitter coffee roast flavor, coffee with cream in a beer, with some chocolate, mild earthy roasted character. Body is about normal but seems a bit thin. Overall, really nicely crafted coffee Porter!

375ML bottle. Was surprised to see this one on the shelves. Porters are always delicious. seeing this has four- barrel coffee is pretty surprising! split 3 ways and might buy some more if it's good. Pours dark brown to black, 1 finger head that fades to a thin line around the edges. Really soft carbonation, really great mouthfeel. The flavor...it's basic, fairly shallow. the coffee itself really lends to the flavor. Creamy, milk, sugar, fresh roasted espresso bean. very tasty! Nice job Anchor but most of the credit probably goes to Four Barrel.

12 ounce bottle. Opaque black color. Dense rocky tan head. Roasted malt nose with notes of dark coffee and soil. Roasted malt flavor has rich dark coffee and subtle cocoa notes. Earthy, woody and robust. Some residual sweetness in finish. A well crafted coffee Porter.

Heavy on the coffee, light on the porter, resulting in a what almost comes across as a rich-n-creamy dark roast coffee soda. Not entirely accurate, though; the porter notes are there, an underlined roasty bitterness laced with unsweetened chocolate, but the java's predominant, roasty and dark with a backbone lined in dark fruit acidity. Seems almost too fruity on the finish, where tart notes offset the porter heft, reminiscent of cascara. Aroma's pretty great, tons of mocha offset by mild ale yeast. Pours a dark brown with a beige head and modest lacing. Creamy but carbonated feel is solid for the style. Not bad, but needs more porter oomph.

Bottle from Total Wine in Folsom, CA. Pours dark brown with a creamy/bubbly tan head. Aroma of very nice coffee. Med body approximately. Flavor is definitely coffee, not getting chocolate, dark malt somewhat obscured by coffee, and there's a definite light toffee note for me. Fairly dry, somewhat bitter. Quite nice all in all.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a black color with a huge fluffy brown head that lingered forever and left great lacing. The aroma was strong coffee, cocoa, wood and cola. The flavor was black licorice, red wine, coffee, roasty malts, vanilla and wood. Very long finish. Medium body. Solid.

$2.30 bottle from Wine Warehouse. Wow, a new Anchor beer. Nice. Pours black with a soft huge brown head. Looks inviting! Aroma of roasted coffee beans, cocoa powder, chocolate. Flavor is tangy chocolate, somewhat fruity perhaps, coffee, light sweet cocoa powder. Good, but they could have upped this a few notches to make it outstanding.
