We start in the brewhouse with our radically traditional recipe for Anchor Porter, which we've been brewing since 1972. We end up in the cellar, where we add Four Barrel Flash-Chilled Coffee -- developed with Anchor especially for this beer -- during secondary fermentation. The coffee used is brewed hot, then flash-chilled within 10 seconds. This proprietary method ensures the vital aromatics and key acids of a great cup of coffee are captured and preserved. The result is a rich, smooth Porter with a roasty malt backbone, a bold coffee aroma and complex layers of chocolate, nuts and spices.

0.355 l bottle from 'Hopt', best before August 2019. Clear, very dark ruby to black with a medium large, frothy, stable, light brown head. Sweetish-malty, quite roasty and a little fruity aroma of lots of coffee, milk chocolate, hazelnut and some dark fruits. Quite sweet, malty, moderately roasty and a little fruity taste of milk chocolate, lots of coffee, licorice, some hazelnut and hints of dark fruits, followed by a short, moderately roasty-bitter, slightly earthy, a little tart finish. Medium to full body, creamy and slightly effervescent mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Nice Coffee Porter, surely benefits from its famous base beer to which the coffee adds some more roastiness.

Bottle from The Beerhive. Black body with a huge beige head. Good lacing. Aroma of coffee, jalapeño and dark chocolate. Flavour of coffee and chocolate with a savoury edge. Thin to medium body with a frothy mouthfeel. Soft fizz. Flavoursome but not quite as rich as I’d hoped.

Rich deep dark brown coloured body with a thick and relatively quickly-dying rich light brown head. Aroma of coffee, light anise, burnt sugars, a dose of toffee and earth and finishing with a scent of lactose and some spent grain. Medium-bodied; Strong burnt coffee flavour showing through with a big dose of anise, fennelseed, some grain and alcohol and a big heavy note of caramel and toffee sweetness near the end with some smoke and perceived bitterness noticeable throughout. Aftertaste shows more of the bittered malt and grain notes than anything else, but some pleasant sweetness is showing through at the end along with the burnt sugars. Overall, a decent enough porter with a ton of coffee flavours, but unfortunately a touch too much bitterness and pungency with alcohol and burnt notes throughout. I sampled this stubby twelve ounce bottle purchased from Whole Foods in New York (Columbus Circle, W 59th Street @ Central Park South & West), New York on 02-December-2017 for US$2,99 when my son turned exactly a month old, sampled just sixteen days later on 18-December-2017 at home in Washington.

Bottle pour into shaker pint glass from Andover Liquors. Appearance is dark brown--almost opaque black--with dark red with light source directly behind, nice sparkle at the side of the glass, 1/2-finger width light brown foamy head with poor retention and light, soapy lacing. Aroma is roasted malts, coffee, dark chocolate and dark fruits. Taste is as aroma. Palate is medium bodied with thick, smooth texture, lively carbonation and rich, bittersweet finish as taste. Overall, rich aroma and flavor with nice appearance and palate, though a bit over-carbonated.
