Imperial Red Ale
Born in Head Brewer Tony Powell’s home brewery, this West Coast Style Imperial Red Ale is a hearty celebration of the brewing art. Almost welcoming you, four hops impart floral, citrus and sprucy Northwest notes to open the festivities. Then, seven malts and flaked barley dance happily across your palate. In the finish Starfish waves a crisply fond farewell. Convivially forthright without cloying agendas, Starfish is like time well spent with your future best friend.

Aged copper penny in color with a pretty head. Sweet citrus, sweet malt, faint spice. Starts initially simple and becomes more complex as you gulp. Medium bodied. Sweet throughout but not cloying. A very enjoyable beer. Hearty.

Growler from Breeze-IN, Juneau AK.
This was poured into a tulip.
A nice looking dark red color with a one finger white foamy head that dissipated within about a minute leaving some clingy speckled lacing clinging around the glass in a speckled sort of way.
The smell started off with a fairly nice sweet citrus leading to combined cocoa covered pine. Light sharp sprucing so rolls about.
The taste was sweet and sharp spicy sprucy pine. The cocoa only comes in after a bit of warming. Sticky sweet citrus and slightly cocoa aftertaste which is pretty nice. Sweet dry cocoa finish.
On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the palate with a mostly sipping quality to it. It seemed appropriately carbonated for its style.
Overall, I say this was a pretty good American Strong Ale that I would have again.

22oz bomber pours with a deep ruby red to amber body the supports a light tan head. The aroma offers up pine hops with thin ribbons of roasted malts and some molasses. Faintly wedged into the middle of those notes is a sliver of fruity esters. The taste begins with a rich hit of resiny pine hops, malts and then roasted maltiness. The pine hops are thick but not sticky and offer up plenty of flavor hops as well as loads of bitter hops. At times weak notes of ripe red apple esters poke through and bubble to the surface. Nice hoppy brew.

Location: 22 oz bottle from Buy Rite, 3/4/13
Aroma: The nose is pine hops, orange/citrus rind, plenty of caramel, and a hint of tea
Appearance: It pours a reddish color with an orange hue, a small beige head, and light lace
Flavor: The taste is mid-plus sweet up-front, with a mid hop that gets more bitter in the finish
Palate: The body is medium, the feel is okay, a touch sticky, and with a dry finish
Overall Impression: There isn't a ton to say here. It's a solid Imperial Red or whatever you like to call this style of beers. There's nothing particular incredible or unique, but there's nothing particularly poor either. Solid.

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled in August 2012. Pours fairly hazy reddish copper color with a nice 1-2 finger dense light khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings to the glass. Aromas of orange, grapefruit, caramel, toast, biscuit, pine, citrus rind, floral, light toffee, and piney spiciness. Nice aromas with good malt/hop balance and complexity. Taste of orange, grapefruit, caramel, toast, pine, biscuit, light toffee, floral, citrus zest, and piney spiciness. Fair amount of pine bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of citrus, caramel, toast, pine, biscuit, floral, citrus rind, and piney spiciness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice balance and complexity of malt/hop flavors; with zero cloying flavors present after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a creamy and sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with almost no warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a very good imperial red ale. Nicely balanced hop/malt flavor complexity; and nicely smooth to sip on. This was a nicely enjoyable offering.

Bottle from Brewery Creek, Vancouver
Hazy red-amber color, small head. Nice fruity aroma, bitter oranges, with a hint of sweat, yeast and vanilla. Medium body strength; the mouthfeel is just a bit drier than expected; very good caramel and toffee flavor, with light toasty notes, and a clear Earl Grey tea character (bergamot); strong bitterness, with a lot of hop resins and some yeasty astringency. In the end, the drier mouthfeel increases the drinkability. Very good.

22 oz. bottle, pours dark red with a small beige head. Aroma of caramel malts, maple syrup and considerable hop presence. Flavour is essentially the same with all the qualities well balanced. Medium-bodied, with a slightly sweet and slightly hoppy finish. Solid, though nothing spectacular.

Bomber from Malt & Vine. Bottle says 7.5% Pours very ruddy, almost ruby, amber with a transient beige head. Aromas of pine and grapefruit rind. Flavor is fairly smooth roasted malt, with a fair amount of grapefruit rind forbitter. Finishes long, slow grapefruit, eclipsing the malt to a significant extent. Very NW.
