Boontlinger Weiss has a split personality. Originally brewed solely for the purpose of barrel aging and souring, we tasted the beer before it was to be racked into barrels, we agreed that it had real promise as a Bahl Hornin’ beer. That’s what can be so fun about brewing, sometimes you just decide to go for it and see what would come out. And for the homebrewers out there – this beer is 40% wheat malt and, no, we don’t use rice hulls.

Boontlinger Weiss is a light, refreshing wheat beer with a twist: a special belgian yeast adds the complexity and balance that are the hallmark of Anderson Valley Beers. Inspired by German Weisssbier, this light golden ale has hints of tropical fruit and banana, and a cool, clean finish.

12 ounce bottle into weizen glass, no bottle dating. Pours lightly hazy golden amber color with a nice 1-2 finger white head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Spotty foamy lacing clings to the glass. Aromas of lemon, pepper, pear, apple, clove, caramel, bread, wheat, earth, and yeast spiciness. Pretty nice aromas with good strength and balance. Taste of lemon, apple, pear, pepper, wheat, biscuit, caramel, earth, and light yeast spices. Light bready tartness on the finish; with lingering notes of light fruit, wheat, bread, caramel, earth, and light yeast spices on the finish for a short bit. Good balance of flavors, but it is pretty watery. Medium carbonation and ; with a fairly creamy and crisp mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is very well hidden with hardly any warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a decent wheat ale. Fair amount of flavors with good balance; very smooth and easy to drink and not offensive. Enjoyable, but I have a feeling this was an old bottle from the taste profile.

End of the keg at Sugar Maple. Massive creamy white head on top of a filtered looking orange yellow body. Creamy, mellow mouthfeel. Medium bodied, quite creamy, smooth golden malt tones. Hyper sessionable, straightforward beer, not so yeast dominated, some faint banana, more clove, but mostly golden malt. A little watery, but very refreshing.

Served on draft at Beer Run in Charlottesville, VA. Pours a yellow color with a very slight haze. Thin creamy white head. Decent head retention. Aroma of wheat, banana and a perfume/soapy note. Weird. The taste is wheat, apples, bitter hops and a dry crackery note. Medium bodied.

On tap at Papago it pours clear gold with near white head. The aroma is firmly wheat and banana as well as faint tartness murmuring away in the background. The taste offers up modest levels of wheat and banana and then moves into sweeter banana notes and faint tartness. Into the finish the wheat, banana and touch of tartness linger for a few moments.

Sampled on draft at Smokin’ Joe’s this beer poured a bright golden color with a large foamy white head that lingered and left great lacing. The aroma was faint tart and tangy citrus and a touch of vinegar. The flavor was tangy, tart and bready with faint pineapple and a touch of caramel. The finish was short and tangy. Light body. Ok.

It’s not just shy sluggin’ gorms neemer! On tap at poor richards this was listed as Anderson Valley Bahl Hornin’ bootlinger weiss so I hope this is the right spot. Smells a little like bandaids. Very light colored beige. and clear. Has a thin head. Mostly flat. Bandaid smelll carries over to the flavors. Rather light but fer sure this is not a weiss, its got to be a wheat ale. Has a dicernable bitterness to it. Same with the finish. Yes, a little more bitter than i care for in a wheat beer.
