Unique and limited edition, this Belgian style ale is crafted once a year as a special treat for those of you who appreciate flavorful, bottle-conditioned ales with character.
This year’s vintage: a rich, dark and full-bodied ale with a fine and generous coffee-colored, beige foam. It’s ready to enjoy right away and you may also wish to cellar a few bottles. It will evolve interestingly well, developing more complex flavors as the years go by. Keep bottle upright in storage.
Best before 9-10-2013.

Pours dark brown with a gigantic brown head that’s VERY frothy. Smells of sweet fruits and malts. Tastes of bubble gum, dark fruits, and burnt malts. Slightly gluey flavor as well.

Refrigerated until 8/19/11 This pours a dark Cola brown with a thick, long lasting tan head. Initially some spice and caramel malt start out the aroma. I expect more as the head falls and lets some of it break through. The aroma becomes much more fruit filled as the glass settles in. The flavor is light and fruity, sweet, but not overly so and there are no hops playing in the flavor or finish. Spices and some raisin flavors. Much lighter bodied than I was expecting.

750 ml bottle. Poured a medium-dark ruby-brown color with a moderate foamy off-white head. Aroma was dark fruits, sweet malts, touch of spice. Flavor is malty, with heavy notes of dried fruits, spices, alcohol notes.

Bottle. So my first complaint is that the damn cork broke off right at the top of the bottle. I wasn’t doing anything stupid with it, but I was in a hotel, with no corkscrew, so it was a great start. Anyhow, finally the pour is vintage Unibroue... mostly foamy head with a little bit of dark body. Aromas are sweet and thick with brown sugar and dark fruit. Similar patterns evolve on the palate... lots of sweet and fruity darkness, with an almost cloying edge to them at times. A little bit of a nutty side current is an interesting distraction, but this is pretty much plums, prunes and sugar. I’m just not totally jammin’ on this one.

C&C 750 from Trader Joes Glen Allen, VA, shared at the 13th Richmond Gathering. Pours a dark reddish color with a medium tan head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma of big spicy hop notes, berries, earthy notes. The taste is toffee, brown sugar, yeast, peppery yeast notes, earthy. Medium-full bodied. Nice.

750 mL bottle. Pours dark brown with a light tan head. Aroma is the usual Unibroue yeast profile with spicy inflluences. Flavor is very spice-influenced, with ginger, molasses, coriander, cinnamon, dark fruit, cloves, and the Unibroue yeast all making appearances. Complex and very well done; this is just a great use of spices.

Bottle. One of the best deals in beer each year ($4.99 for a great 750ml?!). Pours near black with a resilient tan head. Aromas of dark fruits, dates, raisins and a coriander like phenolic spiciness. Flavors of spiced apple, dry molasses cookies, caramel and more belgian yeast phenolics (mostly a coriander spice note). Lively bubbles and dry. Well done.

Bottle. Very nice version of this beer and a ridiculously good value at $5/bottle. Some good spice - ginger, nutmeg - but it doesn’t overwhelm. Nice chocolate and cola backbone with lots of brown sugar. Aroma is a bit weaker than I’d prefer, but the taste is very good. It’s fairly sweet but pleasantly so, and the beer finishes relatively dry and spicy. Mouthfeel is creamy yet effervescent. Very enjoyable.

Pour is a dark brown with a large tan head. Aroma is very fruity and sweet with the typical Unibroue yeast. Flavor is sweet but tart with some dark fruit and candi sugar. The trader joe’s vintage is always a special and cheap treat.
