Bourbon Barrel-Aged Chocolate Coffee Stout
KBS gets its coffee fix in the very first variant to come from our beloved bourbon barrel-aged stout. Yes, KBS may already be brewed with coffee, but it gets some extra oomph when it’s aged on espresso beans after being removed from barrels. The result is a fresh and snappy coffee twist on our classic barrel-aged beer. Who says you can’t start your day with a barrel-aged stout?

Tap at Gourmet Haus. Nice but restrained coffee aroma. Black with brown head that patterns down. Flavor is coffee and roast. Very bitter coffee bean aspect. Back half of palate mellows with smooth booziness. Surprisingly not loving this beer.

Pours black with a tan head. Aroma has notes of roasted malt, coffee, chocolate, oak and vanilla. Taste is heavy sweet and medium to heavy bitter with a long warm, roasted, coffee, chocolate, oak and vanilla finish. Body is full, texture is oily, carbonation is soft.

Black pour with a tan head. The rich aroma is of coffee, roast malt, and chocolate. The flavor is on the sweet side. For comparison I had an Alesmith Speedway Stout the day before and the KBS Espresso is sweeter. Coffee and chocolate comes through nicely. Any bourbon notes are subtle, in my opinion, but this is still an excellent beer.

0.355 l bottle from 'Ace Drinks', bottled in April 2020. Pitch black with a thin, frothy, almost stable, light brown head. Sweetish-malty, quite roasty and a little boozy aroma of lots of coffee, dark chocolate, roasted nuts, a touch of alcohol and hints of dark fruits. Quite sweet, malty, fairly roasty taste of dark chocolate, hard roasted coffee, roasted nuts, some vanilla and just a touch of bourbon, followed by a long, rather roasty-bitter, earthy, slightly boozy finish. Full body, smooth and creamy mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Quite an intense variant of the famous KBS, heavily roasty with dominating coffee flavours, unfortunately with only minor barrel influence. Still very good!

Can picked up from Saveur-Biere, Lille, France and consumed at home Tuesday 26th January 2021 listening to Marc Riley on 6Music. Pours black with a tan head, coffee, coffee and more coffee on the nose. I suspect that there is some traces of Bourbon but the coffee wins out every time. Smooth; super indulgent with coffee, dark chocolate and a lovely roastiness throughout. Super beer.

12 oz. bottle sent by Founders. Bottled 10/16/20. Big espresso smell under the cap. Pours a solid black, with a rich foamy tan head. My first impression is of more espresso strength coffee. Bitterness seems to come mostly from coffee, then the roast of the stout malts settles in. Alcohol is slightly warming, but gets overwhelmed by coffee notes in the end. At first I thought this was not like a Kahlua, but my opinion shifts as I go further into it. Slight notes of oaky vanillin, and then there's that chocolate they talk about. Clean bottle with no sediment. On my palate, there will be a coffee aftertaste for a while. Notable in that it's a dry finish rather than the sweetness of many coffee stouts.

12 oz; about 14 months old. Aroma has notes of coffee, chocolate, pouch tobacco, raisin, licorice, green pepper. Pours inky black with a one finger tan head that falls into a big-bubbly ring pretty quickly. Taste is highly sweet, moderately to highly bitter with coffee, chocolaty flavors.

My 12 oz bottle of KBS Espresso has been aging (briefly) since I bought it late November in Ft. Worth. A very cool evening headed to cold; time to bring out the imperial stout. Duty goes to my New Belgium snifter, the color is one shade short of jet black with a decent medium tan head. I get a nose of dark chocolate and some roastiness. The drink comes with the chocolate for sure, wood, strawberry, dark bread and some less-than-expected coffee. It definitely has that KBS background, just less impact overall than anticipated.

Black with a beige head. Aroma of big coffee, roast, espresso indeed, bourbon showing secondary to the coffee but still very present, oak, vanilla, booze and dark chocolate. Flavour is heavy sweet and bitter. Light full bodied with soft carbonation.
