Poured from the tap @ Dageraad. Chill hazed dark chestnut brown with small white head. Soft meaty smoke, some iodine, a bit thin bodied, lingering bitterness. Meh.

On tap at the Alibi Room, pours a muddy dark mahogany / brown with a small beige head. Aroma is full of campfire smoke, with a little peat, and bready malt. Flavour is intense on the smoked malt, with lots of campfire smoke, peat, and some bready caramel. The smoked malt is really nice, even if a bit overburdensome. Good stuff.

Deep copper brown with a rich beige head. Nice soft bacon smoke. Nice soft smoke and light bitterness. Decent and a bitter finish.

Chestnut brown. Thin head. Lots of smoke, a bit burnt. Soft malts, like chocolate and toatiness. Doesn't have that double decoction, six months in the tank smoothness I expect in a rauchbier, but it's certainly smoky. I probably liked the Smoked Lager from a few years ago better.

Draught at Alibi Room, Vancouver
Very dark. Smoke from a campfire; to put it in perspective, Bamberg Rauchbiers would have a different aroma, 'fatty', schinken.
The body is weak, while the character of the malt is very roasty, and the mouthfeel rather dry; these three elements don't constitute the ideal base for the smoke to express itself, mainly because the weak and dry mouthfeel highlights the burnt character, and the burnt character clashes with the smoke. Burnt malt in the finish.
My expectations were high; but they weren't matched by the experience.

On tap at the brewery. Okay dark brown body with little head. Soft smokey barley on the nose, not too pungent but it's there. Flavour is nice smoked grain with some soft lighter wine hints. Medium finish. Not spectacular but a good attempt at smoked, this is a style that can go very wrong (especially in this part of the world) but it's managed reasonably well.
