On tap at Zum Fransiskaner. Hazy golden with a medium white head. Aroma and taste of spices, some banana and phenols. On the dry side with a fairly light body.

Bottle from Bierotek in Bamberg. Huge Hopfenweisse nose, with melon, peaches, banana, orange. Really awesomely hoppy, with the esters playing second fiddle but working together well. Biscuity wheat malt and cloves. Cloudy medium golden with orange, rather low head. Nice flavor. Weizen aspect slightly subdued compared to the hops. Fruity, also estery, melon, citrus, light tropical, wheat biscuits. Very creamy and almost custard like. Prickly, peppery, rather bitter finish. Just a bit harsh or muddied. Nose is to die for. Another interesting interpretation from Andy.

Bottled 500ml. -Courtesy of and shared with Marko, thanks. Cloudy orange coloured, medium sized white head, mild cloves and banana in the nose. Sweetish bubblegum, light banana and mild yeasty with touch of cloves in surprisingly dry finish.

Pretty cloudy beige blond beer, small creamy white head, pretty stable, bit adhesive, leaving a nice lacing in the glass. Aroma: bit yeasty, some banana, spicy touch, sweet malts. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: pretty bitter, bit malty, sweet touch, lots of banana peel, little smoky (maybe from the yeast). Aftertaste: malty, yeast, banana, some bubble gum, bitter, cloves, bit metallic, floral.

Andy Gänstaller’s personal interpretation of a Hefeweizen – curious to see what this creative and (certainly to German standards) innovative brewer makes of this old German standard… Draught at Dok Brewing Company, Ghent. Tightly membrane-lacing, snow white, medium thick, moussy head slowly opening in the middle but otherwise very stable, equally misty peach blonde robe with pale orangey hue. Aroma of a lot of ripe banana and fresh banana mush, fried pineapple slices, cloves, some vague phenolic ‘smokiness’ even, canned apricots, orange slices, wet white bread, chewing gum, pancake batter. Sweetish onset with souring edges, very banana ester-forward with notes of apricot, pear and peach too, fizzy carbonation, lively but not numbing and perfect for the style; smooth and ‘fluffy’, ‘sweetbready’ and bit caramelly malt body, soft and very quaffable. Spicy and even lightly smoky phenols retronasally, more expressive than average for the style, with lingering banana ester flavour, a late and dim but adequate floral hop bitter ‘kiss’ and, surprisingly, a citric, fresh orange slice-like, highly refreshing aspect to it as well, no doubt coming from the 21st-century hops that went in here, with some light lingering sourishness. In essence a classic Hefeweizen indeed, but more ‘intense’, a condensed version of it, as it were, and in that respect very successful in my opinion. The fresh, sweet and spritzy orange-like aspect of it, established by a highly intelligent use of modern aroma hops, makes it almost seem as if Gänstaller wanted to prevent people from adding a slice of citrus to the beer (as is sometimes done in Hefeweizen) by outrunning them and already adding this flavour to the beer… Very clever beer, almost an intellectual study of the old Hefeweizen, it seems.

Draft glass @ Beerlovers. Hazy orange, small white. Banana in the nose to the absolute max, sweet, custard, plastic DE yeast, banana,… Same for taste, max banana, DE yeast, vanilla, custard, sweet but not sugary sweet, round, thick, not fluffy pleasant thick plastic. This beer gets all point thanks to drinkability, your pallet adjusts, it remains very interesting & it is massively, massively drinkable.

Tap at beerlovers bar 2nd anniversary. Pours unclear blonde. Small white head.. Smell is intense, banana ( overripe) tad phenolic. Taste is phenolic, more so even, than the more usual esters. Very intense.

Keg at Zum Franziskaner, Stockholm. Cloudy golden with mid sized head. Dryish with light-medium body and clean, rounded mouthfeel. Mildly grainy with lots of spicy pear-like hops, slight phenolic banana and cloves. Long bitter finish. A bit heavy on hops, less focus on phenols and softness.
