Bottle from Melbicks Garden Centre, Near Coleshill. Pours a reddish brown with small beige head. Aroma of dark malt, chocolate, burnt treacle, raisins. Taste has a dark malt/treacle but is also quite fruity with plum and raisin, cocoa dusting. Slight spicy hop in the finish, maybe even a touch of aniseed. Near medium bodied, fine carbonation. Good porter.

Cask at Shrewsbury Arms, Stafford. Pours a murky dark brown with minimal cream head. Malty biscuits in the aroma with traces of chocolate. Liquorice is the initial sensation in the mouth, together with molasses and chocolate. Some dark fruits too, and overall it’s fairly sweet. Finish is both smoky and bready – so I guess burnt toast ?! Quite interesting – a little different from yer standard porter.
