The 2015 vintage of our Imperial Stout took our brewery to the absolute limits. We crammed in as much malt as we could physically fit into our mash tun to create a heady mix of luscious bitter-sweet chocolate, cold-brewed coffee, molasses and dried fruit. Drunk young, this beer offers punchy fruit notes and a satisfying warmth from the alcohol, however this will develop beautifully in bottle for years to come as the structure softens and the complexity of the malt flavours really shine.

500ml bottle. Poured a clear dark brown, almost black colour, with a fizzy short-lived tan head. The aroma is roasty malt, molasses, caramel toffee, light smoky, coffee, dark chocolate. The flavour is moderate sweet, with a smooth, rich, oily, roasty, red berry fruit, boozy, coffee chocolate palate. Full bodied with average carbonation. I wasn’t keen on the initial carbonation but that didn’t last. Rich, fruity and really nicely balanced.

Bottle taken away from All Hail Ale at 9.1%. Black with a hint of purplish brown if you can imagine such a thing. Very little head. Molasses sugar, cooking chocolate, a touch of yeast extract. Sweet taste with a heavy savoury yeast kick, like strong Bovril. Sweet and slightly meaty flavours on thw finish.

Bottle from Hogs Back Brewery shop. 9.1%. Rich dried fruit and bitter coffee aroma. Dark and glossy. The beige head looked healthy and foamy before disappearing in seconds. Initially medium bitter with some underlying dark fruit sourness. The caramel sweetness sweeps in for the finish. Medium bodied. Slick. A fizz of carbonation. Long boozy finish. Decent enough. But the booze somewhat obscures the whole. Not the best, not the worst.

500ml Bottle - Black in colour. Plain chocolate, raisins and hints of cold coffee in the aroma. Roasted and rich taste with plain chocolate, molasses, raisins and coffee detected. Nicely balanced and easy to drink yet potent all the same.
