FOR THIS COLLABORATION WITH MANCHESTER’S GOOD MEASURE; A BRAND WITH NO INTEREST IN THE COMMERCIAL SPIN OF BLACK FRIDAY, WE DECIDED TO PUT TOGETHER THIS JET BLACK BREW WITH A NOD TO A TRUE MANCHESTER CULINARY INSTITUTION – THE MANCHESTER TART.

This stout was brewed with a plentiful mix of different grains, ranging from flaked oats to boost mouthfeel, a mix of different roasted barley varieties for layers of chocolate and liquorice character plus some special B crystal malt which is rich in berry notes.

We wanted this beer to be as rich and full in mouthfeel as possible so we also added lactose and maltodextrin to the boil, very complex sugars with low fermentability. In fermentation we added raspberry puree to give a ‘jammy’ depth to our cake interpretation, cherry puree alongside and then spun through toasted coconut flakes. They not only contribute flavour but a silky mouthfeel as a result of their oil content, as well as a touch of vanilla as a good base for bringing the custard character to the mix.

440ml can purchased at Vinmonopolet Langnes. A firm, fawn-coloured head leaving clingy lacing behind. Almost black in the glass. Rather sweet pastry nose, hints of earth, chocolate and berries. Blended taste profile of caramel, hazelnuts, liquorice, and red berries. Mid-dry malty ending, sweet, but offset by slightly tart berries. Pretty aright without greater excitements. (Tromsø 25.12.2020).

Burk. Choklad, kokos och syrliga röda bär. Tyvärr lite för mycket och lite för sött. Helt OK, men är det öl?

Can. Unclear dark brown, close to black body under a medium sized beige head. Aroma of smooth, dark malt, chocolate, cherry, raspberries and hint of coconut. Taste goes in the same direction, super smooth, sweet, creamy dark malt, chocolate, cherry, raspberries and barley notable coconut. Fine body and long lasting aftertaste. A pleasant tasting pastry stout where the pastry is not exaggerated and the fruit is balanced. Quite tasty and well made actually.
