22.01 // INDEPENDENT NORTH // GOOD MEASURE // BLACK FRIDAY // MANCHESTER TART STOUT
6% ABV // 1.076 OG // 70 EBC // 20 IBU
FOR THIS COLLABORATION WITH MANCHESTER’S GOOD MEASURE; A BRAND WITH NO INTEREST IN THE COMMERCIAL SPIN OF BLACK FRIDAY, WE DECIDED TO PUT TOGETHER THIS JET BLACK BREW WITH A NOD TO A TRUE MANCHESTER CULINARY INSTITUTION – THE MANCHESTER TART.
This stout was brewed with a plentiful mix of different grains, ranging from flaked oats to boost mouthfeel, a mix of different roasted barley varieties for layers of chocolate and liquorice character plus some special B crystal malt which is rich in berry notes.
We wanted this beer to be as rich and full in mouthfeel as possible so we also added lactose and maltodextrin to the boil, very complex sugars with low fermentability. In fermentation we added raspberry puree to give a ‘jammy’ depth to our cake interpretation, cherry puree alongside and then spun through toasted coconut flakes. They not only contribute flavour but a silky mouthfeel as a result of their oil content, as well as a touch of vanilla as a good base for bringing the custard character to the mix.

(Can) Black colour with creamy, beige head. Malty, roasted, fruity nose with notes of dark bread, raspberries, cherries, dark chocolate, treacle, vanilla and black coffee. Malty, roasted, sweetish taste with dark bread, raspberries, cherries, chocolate, caramel, treacle, coconut, vanilla, coffee and a mild roasty bitterness in the finish. More than medium body, sweet. On the sweet side, but rich and tasty, with a good mixture of chocolate, coffee and tart berries. Very nice.

Can split at the Digital Shadow Tasting, picked up from an online peddler some time ago, 13/07/22. Light black with a moderate tan cap that veers edgewards. Nose is chocolate, dried red berry fruits, tangy fruit esters, dark malts. Taste comprises cocoa powder, light spice, dried fruit rinds, mellow roast, tangy berry fruits. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Fine.

Level 6 tasting. Can. Cheers! Almost opaque dark amber brown beer, small tan head. Light palate, mildly dry, decent fine carbonation. Light dark malts, modest dark chocolate. Back end is cherry and fruits of the forest berries. Light semi dry finish. Nice juxtaposition of choccy malts and berries but the palate is a little thin and dry.
