L'Internationale Vol II is an historic Biere de Garde that was brewed as part of an international collaboration between roughly 40 breweries, arranged and facilitated by the Saison, Biere de Garde, and Farmhouse Ale Society.
Each brewery involved produced their own version of this beer, with the recipe and some of the brewing techniques determined by the society and the various brewers, while the fermentation and potential oak aging was up to the brewery’s discretion.
We brewed this beer with 90% six row malted barley, and 10% PEI raw wheat (from our pals Shoreline Malting). We utilized turbid mashing techniques to create a starchy wort, and boiled for a whopping 5 hours for some good caramelization in kettle. Hopped with Saaz and Strisselspalt to the tune of 17 IBU. The fermentation and conditioning is what made this beer unique to us -- we sent the wort directly to oak, where it was fermented with a host of microflora unique to that particular foedre. Brewed in early December, it spent the winter in oak before being canned in early May, allowing time to naturally carbonate and condition in can until today.
Rich, complex, and really quite special. Our house cultures have added a distinct tartness and funk, which play well with the rich malt backbone and deep honey vibes.

Amber, a bit of opacity. Thin head. A little bretty, touch of malt sweetness, off-dry brett C finish, with lots of fruitiness. Nice complexity to this...but so not historic.

473mL can, pours a clear golden with a medium white head. Aroma reveals a wonderful saison yeast character, with plenty of oak, bit of spicy hops from the saaz, and earthy rye. Flavour is a bit different, with moderatel tartness, a very grainy base, spicy saison yeast, and earthy oak. Grainy on the palate, with higher-than-average carbonation. Smells better than it tastes. Nice stuff.

Clearish copper with almost no head. Light sweet and funky grains. Sour malty notes and a touch of acidity.
