Pretty good Vienna lager. Has a malty toasty character but a touch crisp in carbonation and thin in body. Still pretty good stuff.

One of the newest Spencers to date, from the most adventurous trappist brewery so far in terms of beer styles - this one representing a Wiener, the original amber lager style, in a kind of 'downtuned' form compared with their Festive Lager. Eggshell-white, mousy and frothy, bubbly, lightly membrane-lacing head on a misty orangey to even amberish peach blonde robe. Aroma of hard caramel candy, cold tea and tea bags, lightly smoky phenols even comparable with (unsmoked) cigarette shag, bread crust, dried apricot, minerals, touch of dried orange peel. Sweetish onset with restrained fruity notes (apricot, apple peel) but very subtly so, medium fizz with light minerally effects, smooth and lightly glueish mouthfeel; peanutty and hard-caramelly malts, subduedly sweetish with a very light toasty-bitterish edge, retronasal smoky phenolic accents again, light herbal hop bitterishness in the end, dryish. Hoppier and more phenolic than a classic Wiener, this is in fact an American style amber lager, very akin to Samuel Adams' Boston Lager (one of the great 'catalysts' of the craft beer movement) or Brooklyn Lager. No flaws here, but I found the Festive Lager a little bit more convincing and original due to its - for the style - higher ABV.

Clear orange beer, small irregular off-white head, little stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: caramel, bit sweet, malty, grains, hay, some banana. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: malty start, pretty bitter, hoppy, caramel, grains. Aftertaste: more bitter, slightly sweet, caramel touch, bit smoky, fruity touch, nice.
