Our Abstrakt series showcases one-off beers, brewed or blended to the peak of our abilities. Each release is unique and only brewed once!

Our latest Abstrakt release is an American barley wine which has spent almost two years hidden away inside bourbon whiskey casks in our Ellon barrel store. Over that time the beer has taken on such an incredible turn of flavour from the first-fill oak, magnifying and rounding out the profile it began with. And that was quite the payload already – Pale, Munich, Cara, Crystal and Brown malt giving a rich, caramel-like backbone for the elements from the wood to interact with.

AB:23 is a monument to the effects of time and the interplay between an American malt bill and the pride of that country’s distillers. The bourbon ageing lifts the barley wine to 11.5% ABV and rich heights of candied orange, fruit cake, cranberry and sherry characteristics all enveloped into a toffee-like aftertaste backed by warming alcohol. As with our other Abstrakt releases, it can be enjoyed now or cellared for several years to continue its development – the choice is yours!

Bottle from BrewDog online store. Pours hazy brown. Vanilla, coconut and decent booze on a nose. Silky smooth drinking. Bourbon, vanilla and coconut lead the taste. Warming alcohol tops it. Great sweetish sipper.

The twenty-third in this fascinating series of BrewDog tryouts, a bourbon barrel aged American style barleywine. From a 37.5 cl waxed bottle. Pale yellowish beige, open, bit irregularly shaped, mousy head lacing in shreds over a clear, deep glowing amber coloured beer with slight brownish-mahogany tinge. Aroma of caramel, candied figs, armagnac, orange candy, honey, withering cut flowers, almond, vanilla-scenting oak wood, old cheese rind, clear bourbon indeed, ripe banana, hazelnut liqueur. Sweetish onset with slight sourish edge, impressions of dried banana, yellow raisins, figs and peach, softish carb, full body but perhaps not as vinous as one should expect from a barleywine; caramelly, bit honeyish and thinly biscuity middle with light minerally aspects, lingering fruity esters and lots of sweet and boozy bourbon in the finish, paired with light tannic woodiness, an aspect of orange candy or even candyfloss and lingering malt sweetness. The alcohol does become a tad wry and tiring in the end, and the overall profile reminded me more of a Belgian style strong ale (in the genre of e.g. DDB's Stille Nacht or even Van Steenberge's Piraat) than a true Anglo-Saxon barleywine; feels a tad thinnish for its ABV as well. But I guess I'm nitpicking here, this is, globally spoken, an interesting sipper, even if this Abstrakt series has produced more innovative and daring brews in the past...

Great beer, so strong but well balanced, the sweetness really balances everything out, if anything, just a bit too much. brewdog hamburg
