Our Abstrakt series showcases one-off beers, brewed or blended to the peak of our abilities. Each release is unique and only brewed once!

Our latest Abstrakt release is an American barley wine which has spent almost two years hidden away inside bourbon whiskey casks in our Ellon barrel store. Over that time the beer has taken on such an incredible turn of flavour from the first-fill oak, magnifying and rounding out the profile it began with. And that was quite the payload already – Pale, Munich, Cara, Crystal and Brown malt giving a rich, caramel-like backbone for the elements from the wood to interact with.

AB:23 is a monument to the effects of time and the interplay between an American malt bill and the pride of that country’s distillers. The bourbon ageing lifts the barley wine to 11.5% ABV and rich heights of candied orange, fruit cake, cranberry and sherry characteristics all enveloped into a toffee-like aftertaste backed by warming alcohol. As with our other Abstrakt releases, it can be enjoyed now or cellared for several years to continue its development – the choice is yours!

04.09.2018, 0,375l bottle @ home:
Nice fizzy mediumlasting head. Aroma is slightly sweet boozy, caramel malts, mild sweet bourbon, vanilla, dark sugar, minerals, oak, bark, grass, toast, burnt sugar. Taste is slightly dry sour-ish boozy, bourbon, weeds, minerals, bark, grass, burnt sugar, dark malts, fruit stones, dark sugar, paper, licorice. Medium to longlasting bitterness, kind of watery boozy mouthfeel. Fair enough.

375ml bottle bought at Vinmonopolet Langnes. Mahogany coloured body with a deep ruby glint. Pearl white head leaving patchy lacing down the glass. Promising taste of almond, nuts, and berries. Mid-sweet cherries, plums, and caramel malts to a solid taste profile on a bourbon backbone. Lingering and smooth malt-berry finish. Full bodied. Lovely slow sipper. (Shared with Finn and djoeye, session at Finns place 24.07.2018).

Flaske spandert av Rune. Delt med ham og djoeye på Nerstranda. Mørk brun. Middels høyt skum med litt farge. Aroma av malt & nøtter. Silkemyk munnfølelse. Smaken søt frukt & kokos. Lett tørr ettersmak. Alkoholen kommer fram etter hvert.

Tap. Haz red-amber color with white head. Aroma is candied fruits, big Bourbon with all the vanilla and caramel parts, raisins. Taste is raisins, vanilla, fruit cake, caramel, orange nectar. Oily mouthfeel with medium carbonation. Hardly any boostiness. Well-made, well-balanced, good Barleywine!

Bottle at home. Pours a lovely copper-amber, with a fine sheet of head. Clear in colour. Aroma is sweet, a lot of caramel, vanilla, lot of bourbon. Big body. Very sweet but deep and complex. Really lovely malt profile, a lot of caramel. Bourbon is really pronounced, lovely! Loads of vanilla and intense oak flavours. Finish is warming and the bourbon comes through strongly again. A sherry note definitely comes through Caramel sweetness lingers. Lovely!

On tap at Hopaholic, pours a hazy dark amber mahogany with a small beige head. Nose brings out caramel, subdued bourbon and toasted oak. Flavour is along the same lines, with lots of toasted oak, subtle bourbon, and caramel. It manages to not leave much residual sweetness, which is appreciated. Complex and well-rounded. Excellent.

At Brewdog Brussels. Pours clear brown. Aroma is vanilla, caramel, nuts, toasted malts, barrel, little booze. Body is heavy, sweet and strong, yet presenting the right amount of acidity to counterbalance. Surprisingly easy to drink, yet not compromising on the punches. Some vanilla and nuts again, not as strong as the nose though. Good!
