Our latest Abstrakt release is an American barley wine which has spent almost two years hidden away inside bourbon whiskey casks in our Ellon barrel store. Over that time the beer has taken on such an incredible turn of flavour from the first-fill oak, magnifying and rounding out the profile it began with. And that was quite the payload already – Pale, Munich, Cara, Crystal and Brown malt giving a rich, caramel-like backbone for the elements from the wood to interact with.
AB:23 is a monument to the effects of time and the interplay between an American malt bill and the pride of that country’s distillers. The bourbon ageing lifts the barley wine to 11.5% ABV and rich heights of candied orange, fruit cake, cranberry and sherry characteristics all enveloped into a toffee-like aftertaste backed by warming alcohol. As with our other Abstrakt releases, it can be enjoyed now or cellared for several years to continue its development – the choice is yours!

Bottle sample at a tasting at Max's place. Thanks zvsn & rayaron. Clear amber. Malt, caramel, vanilla, sweet, boozy, fruitiness, wood, medium-bodied. A bit too boozy and one-dimensional for a bourbon barrel-aged barley wine.

At a tasting, thanks, small stable bubbly head, clear copper color, aroma of vanila, coconut and soggy wood, same traits in flavor with some dried fruitiness, lightish bitterness. Nice but one dimensional.

Sample during Blarney Wine Festival 2018 on 03/17/2018. Clear reddish-amber color with a medium thin off-white head that recedes quickly to an outer ring. Short strings of lace. Aroma of bourbon, malt and fruit. Full-bodied with flavors of oaky bourbon, dried fruit, malt and vanilla. The finish is oaky with a bourbon and malt aftertaste. Above average overall.

Bottle with thanks to Chuck! Pours crystal clear amber, medium beige head, dissipates fairly quickly, good lacing. Aroma is pine, caramel, bourbon, vanilla, oak tannin. Flavor is light plus sweet, medium plus bitter. Light plus body. Very much drinks like a BA triple IPA, which I guess puts it in the American style of barleywine.

Smell of cognac. Cognac colour, off white head. Aroma of cognac, oak, some sugar, some raisins. Soft, round flavours. Lively carbon, mostly sweet. Avoids the kilju flavours present in many other Abstrakts.

bottle. clear golden with a fine smooth nearly white head. looks really really good. aroma has alcohol, bread, toffee, very faint notes of spices like tea perhaps, but very faint. flavor is toffee, caramel, flowers, bitter malts, alcohol, fainter notes of bourbon cocoa and bourbon chocolate and bourbon sweet licorice. flavor is well mixed up and quite a good sipper.

Draught @ Brewdog Helsinki. Pours dark reddish with a smooth head. Aroma of berries, caramely malts, bourbon, wood, oak, vanilla and toffee. Taste is heavy malty, caramely and sweetish with some bourbon, berries, vanilla, toffee, oak and wood. Finish is warming, sweet and malty with loads of caramel, toffee, bourbon, vanilla and syrup. Heavy, bourbony and sweet malty barley wine.
