Appearance - 8 | Aroma - 7 | Flavor - 7 | Texture - 8 | Overall - 7

Poured from a 16 oz can. Aroma has a medium light chocolate note with some faint roast notes. Moderate dark caramel notes with some light toasted bread notes. Light citrus and tropical fruit notes with a light woody note. Pours dark brown to black with a medium large, thick, pillowy, dark tan/light mocha head that shows really nice retention as it slowly, but steadily recedes. Moderate lacing and light legs. Flavor has a medium light sweetness with some chocolate notes and lighter roast and toasted bread. Medium caramel notes. Medium high bitterness. Some light citrus notes with hints of tropical fruit and pine notes. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall, a pretty nice beer, but it’s not really much of an IPA. It doesn’t have a ton of hop character and the malt profile is more like that of a stout or porter. Fairly sweet. I’m not a big fan of black IPAs and this one isn’t really an exception to that.

On tap-foamy brown head with trailing lace-dk brown. A-juicy pine/citrus, roasty med malt. T-follows with a slightly thin finish.

Location: 22 oz bottle from the brewery, 11/4/15

Aroma: Citrus fruit and pine are predominant here over some toasted notes
Appearance: Dark brown in color with a thick, frothy light brown head and strong, drippy lace
Flavor: The flavor is a mix of orange juice sweetness, earth, toast, and a bit of hop bitterness
Palate: Feels fairly clean, medium bodied, with average-plus carbonation, and lingering dryness
Overall Impression: Interesting beer. If I drank this out of an opaque glass I'm pretty sure I would have had no clue it was a dark colored beer. Doesn't have any of the roasted, burnt, or chocolaty notes you'd expect from a dark malt. There's a hint of toast, but I wouldn't call it a forward component. Otherwise, I'm getting a lighter on the bitterness, clean, IPA. Good beer here. Would be a fun one to try in a blind tasting scenario where you not only didn't know the beer but couldn't see it once poured either. (Like the way they taste on Steal This Beer for example.)
